Interview: Q-Games and Nintendo on X-Scape

Apr 27th 2010 11:52AM (Joystiq)
Don't worry, as you can see from the videos on youtube there's tons of action, big boss battles and lots of planets to explore. It has the most text in any game that I have made, but that's because most of my games don't really have a great deal of text in them. :-)

PixelJunk creator disappointed by cheap gamers

Jan 17th 2010 12:15AM (Joystiq)
@CaramelZappa - "This is because more and more developers are giving us better, bigger games at lower prices. That's what competition is. That isn't an "underlying issue", that's how every industry works. "

I disagree with this - one problem is that the publishers, after making their money back perfectly well at full price for their AAA games, then dump them into the low-price range market, flooding it. They don't need to do it as they have made their money back easily already (for the majority of them), but they do it because they can to maximise short-term profits. The thing is, by doing that they are also throttling their future prospects because a huge no. of people have learnt to simply wait for that price drop now. This has the affect of lowering the perceived value of games, bit by bit. This is why I say it is an industry mistake/problem, not a consumer one, the industry has done it to itself.

Now interestingly, Nintendo never do this price dropping thing, and look at how well they are doing.

PixelJunk creator disappointed by cheap gamers

Hey guys, I'd just like to point out that my comments were regarding the industry in general, not any particular game - and I was saying it in the context of it being daft for people to complain about the 10 dollar price point (I wasn't saying I wanted to increase it to 15 as some people are implying).

People waste so much money on designer coffee each day, yet aren't willing to spend more than a dollar on an I-Phone game that will actually take up more of their time and give them more enjoyment.

Also, I wasn't saying gamers are cheap (that is the joystiq headline not mine), but the underlying problem is the perceived value of games has dropped enormously. There are many reasons for this such as the discounting of AAA games 3-6 months after release putting them in the same price window as our games, so people start expecting to see AAA quality at the 10-20 dollar pricepoint and unfairly comparing the titles.

There are many reasons though and I think it makes for an interesting discussion. The response here and on neogaf has been very interesting to read through.

PixelJunk Monsters to invade PSN on Jan. 24

Just wanted to fix a misconception - it's doing very well in Japan. My comments (in the linked article) were about PSN in general.
