Book covers creation of PS3's Cell processor, how Microsoft cribbed it for Xbox

Dec 31st 2008 12:10PM (Joystiq)
This sounds like an interesting read. It's always pretty amazing to find out how ground breaking new technologies come about. If the PS3 never takes off, Sony, Toshiba, & IBM can take solace in the fact that major universities keep duct taping PS3s together to do major supercomputing. Unraveling the mysteries of the universe one game console at a time.

THQ gets 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand

Oct 24th 2008 12:26AM (Joystiq)
Boo on you THQ, Activision, and for anyone else working to bring this to the mainstream audience who unfortunately for the most part don't research their game purchases (as evidenced by the continuing success of the Ubisoft fluff franchiseZ). Using a popular movie, artist, or other pop culture reference to bring trash to market only makes those smart enough to know better angry. I still remember you Jet Li: Rise to Honor, don't think I've forgiven you yet. Did anyone actually enjoy the first 50 cent game enough to recommend it? How was producing this game a solid business plan over Ghostbusters which got canned?

Wii Fanboy Review: Nyko's wireless nunchuk adapter [update]

Mar 13th 2008 12:40AM (Joystiq Nintendo)
I bought this yesterday because I found myself wrapping my neck dangerously tight several times with No More Heroes. Those wrestling moves require that you fling the two seperate controllers in different directions and I've nearly torn the cord from the nunchuck a couple of times. Got the Nyko wireless and I no longer have the problem. Something I really enjoy is when playing Brawl the nunchuck sits on the base like a old school joystick so sometimes just resting it on the table in front of me keeps my inputs fierce and accurate with the added balance support. Then when I just need the remote functions I leave the nunchuck sitting on a nearby surface. I love this thing.

Eye of Judgment expansion coming this spring

Feb 16th 2008 10:53PM (Joystiq)
As one of the few people who kept playing the original eyetoy I am really astounded by the step up in technology on display in the screen shots. Other than the fact that the camera isn't blurred beyond recognition, I really like how the interaction reveals itself to be a little less on the clunky side than I would have expected(from the videos). In the next couple of years with the 3DV Systems depth-sensing ZCam and some upgraded computer hardware we can throw cards out at our computer and play Yu-Gi-Oh or Pokemon. This will probably spawn a series of interactive board games where your pieces on your 2d flat board have 3d interactions on the TV. I like the concepts and celebrate innovation towards better technological interaction... But why, oh why did it have to be on the PS3.

Director of next Mortal Kombat movie talks 're-envisioning'

Feb 9th 2008 3:40PM (Joystiq)
I actually thought that the original Mortal Kombat, first Tomb Raider movie, as well as the Silent Hill movie turned out better than I could have expected. The acting was appropriate for the source materials and all knew they were supposed to be over the top and mindless so they played to those strengths well. The rest were crap or severely B. Final Fantasy TSW and Doom are going to rank right under those because they had good intentions in their production just struck a sour note. (FF:AC was str8 2 DVD and solely for fanboys like me, so not counted)

Rumor: Novels on their way to European DSes

Feb 3rd 2008 4:55PM (Joystiq)
Funny, I've been using my PSP for ebooks and audio books since I first got it. Nice of Nintendo to finally get a slice of the action, though I still doubt that the parents paying for these books will be able to convince the children that reading is more fun without graphics. It was not until the advent of voice overs that the 'basic reading ability' has been squashed from the gaming community. As a long time RPG fan I really never understood the difference between the book and the game other than the games having built in play breaks between chapters. When my nephew actually learned to read so he could play Final Fantasy VII, and has since begun writing fan fiction from it. It's always funny to watch the light slowly flicker on for those 'educated' people who have spent their time shunning the gaming community when television without captions is their primary source of information.

New GameSpot Editor in Chief wants to regain your trust

Feb 2nd 2008 11:53PM (Joystiq)
It's extremely difficult to completely count out all CNET related sites. ie. download.com, gamefaqs, metacritic, these are all still some of the best that I know of for the purposes they serve; but as for gamespot itself I hold in the same reguard as IGN (which isn't good). Joystiq, gametrailers, even G4 are my sweet spots (and yatzee when he posts). I think if they sever gamespot I will continue to check out the other sites without a twinge of sorrow but in general I never did think it was all that special and now after all this the site is just shameful. There are enough free reviews out there that I'm familiar with never felt like throwing money at the so called 'better' reviews. Even gamefly has reviews, though skewed as they may be, but for people volleying for paying readers they really burned a whole lot of people and I think it may be time to take the old dog out back and shoot it.

Gizmondo refuses to stay dead

Jan 24th 2008 10:08PM (Joystiq)
At least the N-Gage had a phone to go with the crappy games (I'm of course referring to the second generation, the 'taco' is not a real phone imo), this guy had better be bringing a host of extras to rival the iPodTouch if they hope to draw even the most minute of interest to a population already embroiled with MUCH larger companies with proven experience in the game market. Sony had to kick it up a notch to introduce the original Playstation by making it a powerhouse of CD-ROM bliss, the Xbox proved to the world that Multi-player could be done online, etc. So I guess my question to the dedicated Gizmodo crew is: What's making you worth my while? Sprites? Really, how original. Obviously there is not a whole lot of information as of right now on the product itself, but unless the graphics match the DS and the extras make my Skype'd up PSP look dated, then I don't really see a need for purchase. So I wait patiently for the WOW.

Kane & Lynch sells a million copies; [obligatory reviewer firing joke goes here]

Jan 24th 2008 12:39AM (Joystiq)
Maybe this is a good thing, because after they buy the game, then they end up sitting at home fight with the controls trying desperately to justify the $60. Once they have finally been filled with enough range, people who would buy crap games are also the kind of people who Myspace. Eventually their whiny personal blogs (read by none of the thumnail avitars they collect as friends) may lead them to other facets of the web. Once you google the title then the wash of scandal seeps across the screen. It is then, and only then that these people have the oportunity to convert to those of us who have some small insight into what it is we're purchasing to play. Or they'll just wait for the next Halo to come out and buy the branded soda, knapsack, canoe, and pajamas to match the Master Chief sheets.
