Nielsen adds games to ratings matrix

Oct 18th 2006 2:37PM (Joystiq)
The Neilsen ratings are the reason shows like Firefly and Arrested Development get sent to early graves while shows like Friends or Everybody loves Raymond stay on for a fucking decade. I guess 85 percent of all games will be Madden now.

The 8-year-old professional Halo player

I'm amazed that no one here seems to be able grasp that the ratings system for videogames is not government controlled, or mandated, at all. It is a voluntary industry-established ratings board. Before the ESRB was established, SEGA led the way by being the first company to voluntarily rate their games. Almost every law aimed at regulating the sale of videogames has been struck down by the courts(or are in the process of being appealed, I suggest you check www.gamepolitics.com for more information). It is much like the movie rating system (here in America)... that is to say: IT IS JUST A GUIDELINE. A suggestion. Not a rule. Not a law. Not issued by or for the government in any way.

28 Days Later: it could've been a video game

I love the movie, and I think a game could have been done very well (particularly if they had been able to get an indie developer to do it... I think the indie guys are a lot more willing to put out something interesting as opposed to something formulaic). That being said, there is a 90 percent chance that any game released would have been crap (and failed horribly next to RE:4).

I'd much rather see a Shaun of the Dead game myself. That would be loads of fuckin fun.
