Opinion: Why I can't go beyond the first 5 mins of Call of Duty: World At War

Nov 11th 2008 8:23PM (Joystiq)
I have always had mixed feelings about "reliving" violent events of the past through games. But it's free speech baby and that's what America is all about! You have the choice to not like it and not buy it or get on your high horse and write about it on your blog. But because something offends your sensibilities doesn't make it wrong. You admittedly like blowing up Nazi's so obviously you have no problem with virtually killing depictions of real life people so I don't get the distinction. The Japanese were not much better than the Nazi's. Plus if you play online you might end up being a German killing Americans so how do you feel about that?

That said I havn't played the game so I don't know what you are specifically reacting to so I guess I'll shut up.

But one last thing. Those of you who demonize America for Nuking Japan need to read your history books. It saved many more lives than it took. The Japanese were spreading propaganda to their civilians telling them the Americans wanted to come and kill them all. To kill their children and rape their women. They would have armed every able bodied Japanese citizen and fought American soldiers to the death in a massacre that would have made the bombing look like nothing. The bombs caused a surrender that saved countless Japanese and American lives. Plus if you believe for a second that if the japanese or Germans got the nukes first that America wouldn't be a glowing pile of rubble you are truly kidding yourselves. America has its shameful deeds and practices in the past like everyone else, but those bombs were not one of them.

Devotec's portable Solar Charger is minuscule, pretty cheap

May 2nd 2008 4:58PM (Engadget)
I did some looking around for devices like this one that can charge an iPhone. Check out Solio.com. They have 2 models (but they are pricier than this one at 79.95 and 199) that support the iPhone and ALL iPod models. The are pricier but they do look nicer and sturdier than this devotec one. Also there are some good reviews on this and other similar devices on Treehugger.com. I think I might get one after a little more research.

Although I wish Devotech did support the iPhone because it is a bit cheaper than others i've seen and appears to be of good quality.

The FAQ on their website has more details about what will and won't charge. Make sure to read it before buying because there are some common devices that won't work with it.

"unfortunately our products do not work with the second generation iPod Nano, Touch or the iPhone"

I second that. There are a bunch of these types of devices out there but almost all of them have very mixed reviews. I want to grab one for emergencies and camping but havn't seen any reviews telling me if they work well enough to bother. Also will this badboy work on an iPhone? Their website doesn't specify iPod types that work.

Poll: Have you been affected by the Xbox Live outages?

Jan 1st 2008 1:59AM (Engadget)
Consider yourselves lucky to have an XBL to complain about. I got the red ring of death 2 weeks ago and am eagerly waiting my brand new (refurb) 360. I'm starting to get the shakes, I need my Xbox fix.

while clumsily getting an image to bounce around the screen is far from running linux or osx you gotta admire his nerdy ambition.

AC Propulsion converts stock Scion xB into fully electric "eBox" car

Dec 11th 2006 8:27PM (Engadget)
Wow. Too bad that most of Americas electricity comes from burning Fossil Fuels. Now instead of paying for gas and burning it yourself you get an overpriced and less efficient car that takes electricity made from burning fuel somewhere else. Brilliant!!!!!! I guess if you can't see the pollution it doesn't exist right? Why not just get a diesel car and burn fryer oil, its cheaper, better for the air and in a pinch you can run it on diesel from the pump.

Live from Nintendo's Wii launch in New York

What about the Los Angeles Launch event at Universal City Walk? I'm going to a Tenacious D concert there tonight so I'm already gonna be there. Are they going to start selling them at midnight there? I hope so. Then that will make tonight the most tasty event of the year so far. The D and Wii in one evening, almost too much for one man to handle.

PS3 hopefuls, part II

Nov 10th 2006 8:20PM (Engadget)
I was there yesterday to pick up a copy of Gears of War. There were news trucks and a Best Buy employee standing guard and no less than 20 or so Dudes (not a girl in sight) lined up in lawn chairs waiting. I could not believe it. I don't know about Sony paying them to do it as some have suggested. I have faith that there are humans so lame that they would actually do this just to be first in line for a PS3. The 9 days would be better spent working so you can afford to pay for an overpriced ebay PS3.

Angered parents considering lawsuit over unconsented fingerprinting

Oct 9th 2006 3:43AM (Engadget)
wow, what injustice. You commited a crime and got caught. Man maybe they should rethink the fingerprinting thing.

Seriously though. I know many people say that its an intrusion of privacy. But its not like they're taking them from A students who don't act out. These are probably kids who misbehave commonly and a handful of them will commit crimes in the future. Now we can catch them easier. We need to stop being so protective of peoples right to anonymously commit crime in this country. We can't even take DNA samples from Death row inmates to try and solve some other crimes they may have commited. It drives me insane. If you screw up once I have no issue with DNA and fingerprints being taken. If anything it might make you think twice before you do something again.
