Exclusive interview with SOE's John Smedley on the DCUO preorder and beta

Sep 2nd 2010 2:08AM (Massively)
Dude, that never friggin happened. Nothing in the C-Store was previously a preorder item. I don't see the insectoid wings, the jester hat, the skewer helm, the special edition defender action figure, the foxbat action figure, the retro future costume set, the aret deco costume set, the antigrav flight ability.....
None of these preorder bonuses are in the C-Store for champions online.

I'm assuming you're talking about STO? I wouldn't know about that game, so I'm assuming so. Even if you were, how can you say SOE is better? They might do the same thing the imaginary evil version of cryptic in your head did once DCUO is out for three months.

Behind the Mask: The Melee Conspiracy

I've never played darkfall, but I disagree entirely with your claim that CO should of been class based. What, so everyone looks really different, but they all function the same? The Archery character works the same as the Munitions character? Fire works the same as Ice? MA:Dual Blades works the same as MA:Unarmed? Yeah, that sounds like loads of fun....

The difference between CO and WoW is NOT what you claim. The difference is simply this: CO lets you create your own character with whatever abilities you like, WoW makes you play as one of 10 premade characters with premade appearances. So what if Blizzard can balance "thier" classes, it isn't much of a feat when everyone uses one of 10 skillsets. You can predict what each class is doing.
I have to imagine that balancing a game with 20 powersets is alot harder to balance.

This is NOT a large mistake as everyone seems to believe. This is part of a test. What is so bad about making a mistake in a test?? If the patch was perfect and cleansed of all the bugs that have been brought up in this article, why would they have to test it in the first place?

In all honesty, it's large mistakes such as forcing people to play as a premade character that shows us that blizzard does not deserve its high subscription rate; noone should be rewarded for shitty character creation.

Behind the Mask: Finding the Holy Trinity

@Dblade
Who said I had Fire Breath? I don't for that character, it doesn't really fit his theme. He's a magician who specializes in Fire, not some sort of demon...

And I wasn't talking about a previous patch, I'm talking about the changes they're going to make in the next major patch that deals with everything Supernatural, which will probably balance out Regeneration.

Also, the Monster Island Crisis wasn't that hard. Solo Grond or Takofanes and maybe we'll talk.

Your arguement is about to become invalid, Arcadian, since the next major patch they are introducing will bring many changes to the Supernatural powerframe. Regeneration is being addressed seperately from the rest of the powers, too.

"Smart enough to take Regeneration"? Wtf does that mean? People who don't want to break their character concept are "dumb"? Because it sounds like that's what you're trying to say. You laugh at people who complain about being forced to take a specific power? Now you're sounding like an asshole. Not everyone should be forced to take the same powers as you, and they deserve to complain if the game punishes people who take the "wrong" powers.

You can take any powers? Really? Tell that to my level 15 Fire Avenger who dies in 2-3 hits. Also, in case you didn't know, the games content does include dungeons that can't really be soloed. And the few bosses that can be soloed will take you about 30 minutes to kill. I suppose you'd describe that as "rolling over" the content though ,right?

Champions Online talks about their new executive producer

I find few people complaining about the costumes in the C-Store...
More people are angry about the character slots they sell there. In a game that blows every other MMO out of the water in terms of character creation, Cryptic knows that people will make alot of characters, so it's a low blow for them to charge for those character slots.

And then they go on to charge over 10$ for a retcon token. This is a thing that takes abotu a minute for Cryptic to program. No work goes into making this at all, why do they feel the need to charge for it? Same thing applys to the "Rename Character" and "Additional Costume Slot" services they sell.

I still find CO alot more fun than other MMOs, though. I don't blame all of Cryptic for the misdeeds of a few higher ups.

Couldn't of said it better myself, Cray.

We get it already, guys, you don't like Cryptic.
Now STFU. Some of us come here from the Champions website because we want to learn more about the game. Yeah, this interview wasn't very interesting, but these guys do like, 10 interviews a week from what I've seen. They can't make every single one special, and they don't want to answer questions about why so man people hate their guts several times a week.

We don't sit around all day waiting for Massively to post something Cryptic related so we can tell everyone what we think of the company for the millionth time like you guys, ok?

When has cryptic ever "Touted there games as diamonds"????
I followed the Champions website for months before beta, and not once did they promise anything they didn't end up delivering . Yeah, Harv, I bet it's really easy for you to flame CO if you make up stupid lies about Cryptic promising CO to be the best game ever. Sorry state? You mean new content, major fixes to the powersets that need the most work, and the implementation of monthly content additions? Oh, yeah, real sorry. Honestly, the customization CO has in terms of character appearance and abilities, CO makes most other MMOS seem like turds themselves. How can anyone stand playing as a character with same appearance and gameplay as everyone else? Is that even an MMO?

The guys at the CO forums are right. Most MMO websites want to see MMOs reach their full potential and suceed, all the assholes at Massively just want to flame companies and see them fail.

The Daily Grind: What do you think of Cryptic?

Mar 31st 2010 6:34PM (Massively)
"Simple" and "Lite" are NOT the same thing. CO looks just as good as other MMOs. It has a much more advanced character creator than almost every MMO (APB is the only MMO I can think of that has a more complex one). It may not be as big as other MMOs, but it certainly has as much detail in regards to environments. The skill selection is one of the most fun out there.

Just because you don't have to spend hours calculating the most effective min/max to "totally pwn teh noobz" doesn't in any way mean the game is "lite".

It almost sounds like you believe they don't deserve as much money as other games get on the basis that they didn't spend as much time developing the game, which is pretty stupid if you ask me.

An interview with Champions' new Executive Producer, Shannon Posniewski

Mar 31st 2010 6:03PM (Massively)
Wow, no "EXILE BILL ROPER FROM THE VIDJAGAME INDUSTRY" or " BURN CRAPTIC TO TEH GROUND!!111" comments yet? I'm honestly shocked.

As for the teaming issue, I have to say that I don't see a problem at all. I team quite often if I see somebody doing the same mission as me, and only a few people decline my invite. I did the Vibora Bay Crisis map entirely teamed with a couple of my SG mates. In fact, the third member of our trio joined our team because we invited him to our SG. I don't see any major problem with the social aspect, and from what I've heard, the RP community seems to be thriving. I'd much rather see them add new powersets or, like Shannon mentioned, vehicles. Even some new regular travel powers would be appreciated, even if they're just variants of other ones.
