Engadget's relaunch giveaways: Slingbox AV!

Oct 5th 2006 8:32PM (Engadget)
well i have rcn hdtv dvr converter box with all the goodies and im also running a t1 connection from my home business. i dont really kno if itll help but im planning on getting satellite also since rcn doesnt really have a hefty sports option including football. the only thing left is to be able to stream a 360 or a custom pc fully rigged with games and able to play them at a hotspot or at a friends house. guess thats still a few years away or atleast til i get fi-optic in the house. thanks engadget....!

One more secret for the PS3, infinite sighs

Aug 26th 2006 7:23PM (Joystiq Playstation)
it probably gonna be support for the psp directly with the ps3. probably something like file transfers and stuff. i mean i really havent read anything solid about that but if they havent confirmed it then thats exactly what it can be. i dont think theyll put linux on the box cuz theres not a good percentage of ppl that are linux literate. the only ppl that may be literate are us, the online power user community and we only account for about 20% of users and thats a lot considering you have the ton of kids the high school kids and the rest of the world that involves parents and such. if it is linux then i dont think itll be a big deal or a big draw. and they better put the rumble feature back on. if they dont most games will feel muted.

DS as language tool

id love this. im dying to learn japanese and i just downloaded the cracked version of rosetta stone. im learning here and there but its unconfortable cuz i dont have a mic. plus i have to do it when i get home and i get home around 10 and all i wanna do is play halo. i really wish this would be done even if its in homebrew style though i doubt the homebrew stuff will be sophisticated and well made as a language game would be done by professionals.

by the way why wouldnt the "official" gui be in the dev kits. wouldnt they want to incorporate sum sort of interactivity with the games? i just figured these are all lil things that can change a persons mind. and i apologize for the grammer in my previous posts.

A video walkthrough of the PS3's menu

to tell you the truth a lot of things were copied between each competitor but only sony has copied all the innovative ideas. the rumble was innovative but it became a standard. now the xbox guide button was an innovation different from the psp home button. the psp home button stops the game to bring you to the home menu. its the same as just pressing select and going to the menu option. the guide button provides direct access in game to all your info pertaining to the 360 including all live elements. and only sony has copied the motion sensing and ok the psp menu is nice but as stated b4 its good for a handheld but not for a big screen especially if it doesnt scale to size. now i dont kno how many ppl dont really get the 360 dash, but if you cant find what your looking for in there then you really shouldnt be messing around with consoles. honestly im surprised that sony didnt copy something that would be absolutely useful and not just some add in to compete with nintendo and microsoft. they shouldve focused on a way to connect to pcs the way media center on the 360 does. if sony would do such a thing that can connect to any pc and share the files no matter what platform they would absolutely knock down the media center add in from the 360. again i dont kno the statistics of the use of such a thing but because i have so many videos and music on my pc its nice that i can see everything thats on my pc without having to go to my pc.

so i say this, if sony wants to make a name for themselves all they had to do is take away from the resources they used to develop the cell proc and create a way to connect to pc's. if they had done that it wouldve most certainly drop the price to a more competive range by the time christmas came. i dont maybe i shouldve taken kaz's job.

well for those of you think that my 2500 pc is impractical

how about having children that want to watch the whole season of dbz or dbgt. well while they do that i might want to burn the 3 dvds that i just got from netflix today so that i can send them back tomorrow and get three more. obviously while im waiting id like to play a lil bit of fear and why not play it at the best quality. after that maybe id like to fix up sum pics of my family, print them out and frame them. all these things in the hour that i have free from work when i come home. i do have a wife and kid to attend to. and i do have a network admin job. look me up at agere systems. damn right im cocky but guess what you can call me a practical power user too. if your media center pc actually cost 500 dollars than all you have is the case with a cheap proc a slow hdd cheap memory a standard mobo without gigabit lan and probably a generic cdrom. now whose to say that you can stream your stuff to your 360 or use your pc to the fullest potential it has but ill tell you this much. your likely to get system crashes on the regular after 4 months use. it probably takes up to a minute to boot up, youd have major network congestion streaming to your 360. so all you have your pc for is internet and streaming. and not to mention if you dont have a proper gfx card then your probably having problems and hiccups with your media center pc. so i guess you are getting what you paid for.

to brad lee.

for all that to happen sony would have to have a big bank to sustain the hit. and i dont think they do. on top of that developers already take an average of about 10 months to produce a game roughly 10 gigs multiply by 5 and you wont see a game in 4 yrs, if the developers were to take full advantage. dont forget they developers still have to "learn" techniques from scratch to produce games for the cell tech. this will push back production times and will sway most developers to the 360 and wii because they will already use conventional techniques that have already been mastered using inexpensive resources. i just think that sony is making a huge mistake.

what they shouldve done was create a ps3 with conventional tech, have already launched, push the cell and blu ray tech through other products then come out with a ps4 with updated tech which far surpasses the ms and nintendo camp and forces them to buy into sony's tech for cell and bluray just to keep up. its just common sense really.

ohh and by the way i spent 2500 on my media center pc.
now let me tell you what my pc can do that yours cannot.

burn a dvd in 15 min.
flawlessly use adobe cs 8 without any bottleneck
seemlessly locate upto 500 gigs of info in less than 8 seconds
and play fear with framerates of upto 60 fps on a 20 inch ferrari edition moniter at full speed using an amd x2 4500 proc that cost about as much as your pc. ALL AT THE SAME TIME. not to mention stream video perfectly to my 360 ALL AT THE SAME TIME. i dont plan on upgrading for the next 2 yrs so i think its well worth the money that i spent building it.

like i said damn im good

i second the fact that spec wise the gamecube is ontop of the ps2 and you can speak upon how long it takes for a game to look great on that console re0 and mario sunshine both had great visuals and were very early in the cycle of the gc. its on the developers whether or not they want to take full advantage of the console. as a matter a fact the gc was as strong as the xbox considering the specs.

i dont think sony is going to reduce the price at any time in the future with the exception of the tradition 100 dollar price drop. sony is taking such a big hit with the ps3 that they would have to keep it at that price point for the next 3-4 yrs just to make a small margin of profit. the same thing goes for the 360 but the difference is that 360 is taking a smaller hit and they could reduce the price of the 360 in 2-3 years. this would hurt sony big time and would force them to drop their prices as well. this domino effect will then cutback on company resources for sony in which they wouldnt be able to produce a "ps4" without taking another huge hit, while the "xbox720" reaps the benefits of a huge resource pocket, bill gates account number and exclusive third party support for a true next gen console with 100 terabyte hdd, mind reading controllers and no disc drive because everything will be downloaded via the internal satelite connection which will allow for streaming of video from all over the world. damn im good.
