Former EGM editor speaks on state of PSP in Japan

Sep 27th 2006 4:23PM (Joystiq Playstation)
Pixelator-
I think you need to define "AA+" titles. According to Metacritic DS has more games above 90 (PSP has zero) and more games at or above 85 (12 to 10). PSP has more games at or above 80 (32 to 23), but I have yet to meet anyone with 32 games for a handheld system.

It is also obvious to anyone watching the gaming scene in Japan that the DS is not only relying on marketable characters, but is also creating new hits for new audiences. If Brain Training and the other non-games had not come out in Japan, the two systems would probably be about the same. I can't picture Hello Kitty girls buying the English language training or cookbook or much brain training.

So next time you predictably bring up metascores, try to clarify your comments, and feel free to admit that the DS might be doing well because a company thought outside the box for once, actually understanding what the market wants.

Ubisoft looks for more female players -- Alive coming to Wii

Sep 11th 2006 4:26PM (Joystiq Nintendo)
Not that I doubt Ubisoft's fixation with Nintendo's Wii, but the linked source never really states which console(s) will get Alive. Given the intended audience for the game, and Ubisoft's multiplatform tendencies, I'm fairly confident that you're right, but the title of your article may be a bit premature.

Hudson defends crappy Bomberman

Sep 8th 2006 11:05AM (Joystiq Xbox)
Not only does the game lack local multiplayer, but they got rid of throwing and kicking, too. That eliminates a ton of the strategy of the previous Bomberman games.

I guess it wouldn't make sense that a robot/human could only kick/throw in four directions.

Broadway chip production well underway since July

Sep 8th 2006 9:52AM (Joystiq Nintendo)
The fact that one component of the Wii is on schedule does not mean that they are ready to ship completed Wii consoles. In fact, the same people (Martino from IBM) say that production of the Cell processor is going well, too (according to Kotaku). Sony says that they have at least 3 million Cell chips waiting around (also from Kotaku). It only takes one component shortage to delay a console.

The quote that hints that Wii may be ready early wasn't included with the Joystiq/Wii Fanboy article, but it states:
"Today's milestone marks the final stage of our drive to reach both core and nontraditional gamers with an inviting, inclusive and remarkable gaming experience," said Genyo Takeda, Senior Managing Director and General Manager for Nintendo's Integrated Research & Development Division.

"Final stage" is a good thing. It is bigger news than that Broadway is being manufactured.

An apology, and a note on hype

Sep 8th 2006 9:32AM (Joystiq)
Like many others here, I find it odd and somewhat hollow that Robert himself did not apologize. What do Chris or Ross have to apologize for?

For those of you who don't know the complete situation (you probably won't read this post, but that's okay), Robert did more than just blatantly overhype the original post. He followed along in the comments section giving hints and telling us how he was so excited when he heard the news and that he wanted to tell us right away.

Personally, if I were Robert and was reading every comment on my article (which he did) I would have seen that EVERY guess was more exciting than the actual news and realized that this would not end well. Perhaps Mr. Summa doesn't get many "scoops" and was flattered by everyone hanging on his every word. Perhaps he really thought that news that one of the many pieces of the Wii console is going well was more exciting than most of the crazy ideas coming out in the comments section. Who knows (since we haven't heard his side).

I'm not one of those people that thinks a blazing effigy of Robert Summa posted as a YouTube video on this site is needed, but I do think that an apology by the offender would do a lot more to re-establish Joystiq's image than the apology of someone who happens to work at the same place. Either way, I'll be glad when next week rolls around and we can all have something real to burn a thousand comments on. It's too bad Joystiq made a fool of themselves right before such a big opportunity.

Nintendo says Wii production going smoothly

Sep 2nd 2006 10:04AM (Joystiq Nintendo)
I think hoping for an October release is like hoping for the price and release date at Leipzig. Could it happen? Sure. Have there been "hints"? Maybe.

Even on this very site, in the article about ambassadors, it states: Also of note is the date of the event (September 29th) and an excerpt from the back of the cardboard Wiimote: "The event will occur several weeks before Wii launches..." Now I don't know about you, but to "several" usually means more than a few, or about 4 or 5. That would put launch at the very end of October, or early November.

In other words, if it is an "October launch," it will be so late in October that you might as well call it November (at least according to what we know). At least now we know that October 2nd is not the release date.

The Ides of September

Sep 1st 2006 10:49AM (Joystiq Nintendo)
It looks like Japan gets a September 14th conference as well. That puts theirs as the first of the three.

Xbox 360 wins the MySpace war. So what?

Sep 1st 2006 10:36AM (Joystiq)
MySpace may get a lot of interest drummed up for something (see Snakes on a Plane), but the that interest doesn't necessarily translate into success (see Snakes on a Plane).

MySpace is a haven for bored little preteens and self-absorbed teenagers. They can go see a movie advertised on MySpace, or a concert, etc. but they definitely don't have a "second job," if they even have a first job, so they definitely can't afford a PS3.

I wouldn't be too worried about these companies not having a page on MySpace. Microsoft seems to be the one pushing the MTV/MySpace preteen crowd.

PS3 meets PS2: Blu-ray playback interface revealed

Sep 1st 2006 9:52AM (Joystiq Playstation)
Even if I owned a Blu-ray player I would still purchase all of my movies on DVD, except perhaps movies whose only purpose is cool looking explosions and other eye candy.

Why, you ask? Easy. I can play a DVD on my computer, I can (illegally) rip a DVD to my computer and store it with other movies on a huge set of hard drives, I can watch a DVD on my laptop on a plane, I can watch a DVD in any room where I have a TV and DVD player, or at a friend's house.

DVD players are dirt cheap. DVD drives in computers are standard. DVD video quality is more than adequate. When Blu-ray drives/players drop below $100, or they stop producing DVDs entirely, I will purchase "HD" movies.

DS dominates Japanese game sales charts

Aug 31st 2006 11:16AM (Joystiq)
I know David's copied post was a joke, but I just want to clarify that there are third party titles on that list. Tamagotchi is by Namco-Bandai and the Final Fantasy series is obviously not published by Nintendo. Mario Hoops 3-on-3 was also developed by Squeenix, though published by Nintendo.

Were there no new games released for the PS2 this past week? Usually PS2 has at least one title up on the top 10 for being it's first week out. I'd hate to have my new release trounced by eight older games (some of them MUCH older).
