From wikipedia: "The initial team was composed of Garriott, Starr Long, Rick Delashmit and, a bit later Raph Koster, who became the lead designer for the project."
From Starr Long's Linkedin: I was the Project Director of Ultima Online, one of the games credited with creating the Massively Online Game industry, and now the longest running MMO in history.
So if anyone was to take credit away from Garriot, it would be Lord Blackthorn himself. I'm not sure where your "as far as I can tell" knowledge comes from, since the game was released 14 years ago and in development for several before that. It seems difficult to glean knowledge from the outside looking in, especially going back 15+ years.
Please, please never give Raph Koster any form of credit that could possibly be misconstrued as positive when discussing Ultima Online again.
I think this could potentially be a very good thing. Halo 3 was a great game with forge, saved films, etc. That being said, the actual gameplay was basically Halo 2 with a different starting weapon. Which wouldn't have been such a bad thing, had my friends and I (and a ton of other people) not played Halo 2 for 2 years off and on.
It got old fast, and for the first time in the Halo series history there was competition.
I actually like what Activision is doing with CoD. Yes, I know it's all about money for them, but having two studios work on the same franchise lets them play off of each other. Say what you will about CoD3 (I personally liked it, just not as much as 2 or 4), IW was able to take some of the concepts and refine them. Imagine how Halo 3 (or 4) could've been different had another studio made a title in the middle with their own ideas.
I'm confused. Do the critics not love it? Are the people not buying it? Is he not going to make a good deal of money off of this game?
And who made that possible? Microsoft. Who has had a big ole picture of Braid on the 360 dashboard for days now? Microsoft.
So things didn't go exactly the way he wanted to. Isn't that to be expected when dealing with a multi-billion dollar company that is providing free advertising to a userbase of millions for you? I'm with all the folks above, hire a freakin' PR person and shut the hell up.
"People that don't care are apathetic and don't want to care."
Or maybe in the case of the dashboard, they don't view them as ads at all, but rather helpful links to things they might be interested in. I've never thought of them as ads, rather a "Hey, the CoD5 trailer just went live, if you want to check it out!" Half the time whatever is on there isn't even for sale. (Yet.)
Of course, user experience may vary. Instead of being "apathetic", some people may choose to get bent out of shape about something exceedingly trivial and go rant on message boards. I've heard of that happening.
"I just want the option to share my date or not share my data. That's what I hate about Live is any friends can see anything and everything that I have played. I am one of those privacy nuts for the most part."
If only there was a way to block people from seeing your game history.. oh wait, there is. Sign into your profile on Xbox.com, go to privacy settings.
Now that your reason for hating Xbox Live is gone, I expect to read nothing but good things about it from now on. ;)
