Stardock CEO: Retailers killing themselves with digital distribution

Apr 20th 2009 11:35PM (Joystiq)
I think what he's saying is that retail stores need to make it part of their overall strategy, and "add value" to the digital purchase and not just push people who come into the store to buy a code (as if it were a disk) and leave. After all, why go to a store to buy a box with a code in it or a code-card if I can just buy a code online? But make it part of a good shopping experience where there's a reason to be in the store and yet make the digital purchase. For instance, I might be at the store buying a strategy guide and picking up pre-order swag and oh btw the game itself is just a code.

That's not so bad... except that I would honestly rather just pre-order with Amazon because I've had problems actually getting my pre-order swag from GameStop. And the last time I wanted a strategy guide I ordered it right from the publisher, who shipped my copy to me before they shipped the book to retail.

Is Netflix PS3-bound, too?

Mar 25th 2009 9:13AM (Engadget)
I'd probably do it. $10 one time is no big deal. The thing is, I don't see a lot of things I'd want to stream on Netflix, but I see some. I'd be more interested in steaming to my PS3 hooked up to the big tv with a couch in it than to my desktop PC.

New Persona trailer highlights new cutscenes, battles

Mar 25th 2009 9:09AM (Joystiq Playstation)
The new version probably won't seem very different in Japan, but here it will be huge. The localization of Persona 1 was flat-out bungled. Translations were abysmal, and half of the gameplay (a second storyline) was completely cut. The game was a rough diamond in the past. People who are fans of it mostly regard it well for the story and the ambition of the game. If the remake/port features tweaks to the battle system to smooth them out and then features a current-atlus-standard translation, it will be a solid game. It will probably still be a bit dated in some respects but the people who are interested in the series will likely enjoy it a lot.

The Path creeps us out with launch trailer

Mar 12th 2009 12:29PM (Joystiq)
I like the basic idea of the game but the execution looks terrible. If it was a Nintendo DS game ... then the graphics might be acceptable. it looks like machinima made with the Sims engine.

Joyswag: Resident Evil Collector's Edition (PS3)

I think a great location for a new RE game would be Washington, DC. You could make a big part of the plot holding off the hordes of zombies before they get to the Pentagon and the White House.

Rumor: Persona coming to PSP

Jan 16th 2009 10:50AM (Joystiq Playstation)
Some of the characters from Persona 1 show up in Persona 2, as playable guest party members, adversaries, and NPCs to talk to for information (moreso in P2 Eternal Punishment than Innocent Sin). However, the plotlines of the games are separate so it's not necessary to play any previous games to understand what's going on. Similarly, the two Persona 2 games are taken from different perspectives so it's not necessary to play them both. In fact, only playing EP will let you have a much fresher perspective on certain things.

Rumor: Atlus preparing Persona remake for PSP

Jan 16th 2009 10:22AM (Joystiq)
Oh gods yes. I would have guessed the Nintendo DS for Persona 1 -- the 2 screens would be perfect for having the map on one and the moon phase and other menu items on the other one -- but PSP is also good. I definitely was hoping for an Innocent Sin port to PSP and I guess if they start on Persona 1 for PSP it's likely they'll do all 3 first gen games onit as well.

Ironically, since Persona 1 predates Final Fantasy VII it is really a very crude game and remaking it (not *porting* it) to the PSP should result in a big improvement in gameplay. And of course, Atlus US has the opportunity to improve on their craptastic original localization that cut the alternate story line completely out and mangled names heinously.
