What are your favorite 2+ player games?

Nov 17th 2006 7:41PM (Joystiq)
Secret of Mana (SNES) - the most fun I have ever had with a multiplayer game. My roommates and I would order hot sugar cookies delivered (!!!) to our dorm suite and play for hours on end. If your health wasn't in jeopardy and you took a potion that someone else needed, you had to be prepared for a beatdown.

The game required a special multiplayer adapter for the system IIRC. We also played NBA Jam and Super Bomberman 4 player, but SoM was in another league altogether.

My wife and I played Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance quite a bit on the xbox. Hmmm, I wonder if she'd get into the new Marvel game for Wii?

Wii's TV debut tonight, bootleg on YouTube

OK, that commercial is awesome. I dug the PS3 rubik's cube ad, but this is a slam dunk. Seeing all those folks getting down with a couple of (presumably) japanese dudes and the Wii put a big fat smile on my face.

Who produced the music?

Oh, and that looked like lemonade to me.

Nintendo doesn't like next-gen optical discs

If Sony took out Blu-ray and cut the PS3 price accordingly, I would be MUCH more enthusiastic about getting a PS3 sooner vs. later.

Microsoft's ad budget: $945MM [update 2]

"Nintendo also has to educate the masses about themselves (theyve been out of the console race for a decade)"

Yeah because no one knows who Nintendo is. Damn, launch is in a week hopefully they can get the word out about their company ASAP!!!!!!!!111one

Somebody needs to explain the Zune to me, because I just don't get it - why should Apple be paying attention?

Nintendo Wii marketing to exceed $200 million

Nov 12th 2006 11:04PM (Joystiq)
Wow, they're really in the best position they've been in 10+ years to cash in on the hype they've legitimately generated with the Wii. The next 13 months are going to be VERY interesting.

The interesting challenge will be getting the non-hardcore to have a high game attachment rate, though, when you sell every console at a profit, you're not exactly dependent on software sales.

"All Sony need to package a fruity-coloured PStwo with EyeToy and a bunch of games and dump it for $100 --> end of Wii." Yeah that's it, Sony hasn't sold enough PS2 units yet! Brilliant!!!

Top ten things you may not have known about the Wii

Thanks for the tidbits!

Please ignore Killroy, his hatred is tired.

Finally, I didn't want to add post #200+ to the point-counterpoint on Zelda, but I thought it was some of the weakest and most pathetic post-bait writing (on both sides) that has been published on this site. I love and appreciate most of what I read here, but was really disappointed that you stooped to that level. It reminds me of the "huge announcement!!!" post earlier this year. Please edit articles so opinions presented have at least some substance to back them up.

Climbing the learning curve with Wii Sports Bowling

Nov 11th 2006 2:56PM (Joystiq)
I can't think of a single xbox game that couldn't have been reproduced perfectly on the cube. The only things the cube lacked were media capacity, a hard drive, and an obese footprint. The cube ports that suffered did so because of inadequate development times / small teams, not hardware limitations.

The wii is obviously more powerful than an xbox, not "on par."

But this is all irrelevant and way off topic. I'm GLAD bowling can't be "cheated" on, and hope the other wii sports games have been programmed the same way. It's BOWLING, what's the point if you can cheat on it? Zelda is totally different, swinging a sword with bravado motions in a 70+ hour game can get tiring for long sessions (though you can do it from impressions I've read). Nintendo was smart to enable shorter swings for that game.

The level of 1:1 controller motion authenticity should be totally up to the game designers, and basically it is. Wiimote FTW, T minus 7 days @;)

Wii's Zelda charms non-gamer, Wii Sports, others fail

Mode7, I totally agree with you. I don't think Nintendo is out to "save" the industry, but the whole "blue ocean" thing is a very valid development and marketing strategy. I just think it's great to move gaming in a different direction, especially with the interface itself. The Wii complements the PS3 and the 360 very well - it will definitely be my primary console, but I can see it as a secondary console for others. Either way, it promises to do stuff totally unique from PS360.

As far as the games go, what I don't want is warmed over ports with little to no thought put into using the Wii-mote in interesting ways. Developers should see the controller as a challenge to them to use their creative juices. The potential for the wiimote/nunchuk to increase immersion is tremendous.

I think the second+ generation of wii games will have more 1:1 mapping of controller movements to in-game activity. The improvement in graphics prowess will be _relatively_ less, given that the hardware is already familiar to developers. The key will be a strong first year of console sales - a strong installed base will enable third parties to put significant resources into software development.

Wii's Zelda charms non-gamer, Wii Sports, others fail

It really makes no sense to generalize based on an n=1 experiment that nintendo needs to make any changes at all in its game development or marketing. They have something for everyone is the point. But clearly, Zelda has evolved over the years into something with truly broad appeal. I don't know too many female gamers sadly, but a large percentage of them play the Zelda games, especially compared to my male gamer friends, many of whom are locked into sports & shooters and won't venture outside of that realm.

And on a final note, lookie here: more pointless bile from >. What a surprise! Don't you have ANYTHING better to do than hate? You wonder why you have a so-called "following" - it's because the unconstructive negativity of your comments continually sticks out.
