Lodsys files suit against third-party App Store developers

May 31st 2011 7:54PM (TUAW.com)
Translation: they wanted to sue in the patent-maniac land of East Texas rather than get their arses handed to them in a hat in Apple's legal venue. Stand-by for a quite massive legal action coming from Apple. This ain't over yet.

TUAW's Daily Mac App: PDF Signer

May 31st 2011 4:55PM (TUAW.com)
$9.99 is pretty steep for functionality that's about to be free in Lion or included in other much more capable apps such as PDFPen, etc. 99 cents might be more in line with what you get here...

Developers band together to fight Lodsys if necessary

May 25th 2011 9:52AM (TUAW.com)
Yeah there was never going to be any lawsuit from Lodsys so this banding together is not necessary. What happened was- the folks behind Lodsys had these old, broad patents that were about to expire and happened to be part of a massive portfolio Apple was licensed to. That company put together a super shoddy website and a guy (Mark Small) in an office in patent crazy East Texas and then sent out these silly letters to devs. The hope was a quick buck for zero effort. It was a lottery ticket hedge.

And now that Apple has rightfully put the smack down on this pointless effort they will quietly go away and never be heard from again as their patents expire. My only hope is that the next time a real patent troll with deeper pockets decides to go after devs directly Apple's response will be swifter and harsher. As a wise man once said, "it's not about the money- it's about sending a message."

Foodish takes the calorie counting out of meal tracking

May 19th 2011 7:36PM (TUAW.com)
+1 for LoseiT- it's helped me lose 28 lbs since Jan. I'm a size 30 jeans now and my wife has never been happier. It's kind of an oxymoron to have an 'easy' calorie counter. If you can't be bothered to enter in the calories accurately you're not serious about losing the weight...

Apple and Google headed for round two with Senate privacy hearings

Has our gov't ever seemed less relevant than it does in 2011?

Lodsys responds to targeted iOS developers

May 16th 2011 1:50PM (TUAW.com)
BS- they are not entitled to a penny! This is just low-hanging, patent troll fruit. If they had such an open/shut case they'd a.) be asking for a lot more, b.) not having to look so amateurish by arguing their case on a blog. They'd be patiently waiting for their day in court.

And they'd just be suing. Anyone who 'threatens' a lawsuit instead of just filing one knows they have a weak case and is relying on the fear of a lawsuit to get them over the hump. Stand strong iOS devs- you will be vindicated.

Microsoft wants buyers to 'do the math' and select a netbook over a MacBook Air

May 6th 2011 2:44PM (TUAW.com)
Would love to see an Apple reply with the hidden costs of going with the PC machine- i.e. lost productivity, time waiting on tech support, data loss from viruses/crashes, etc. I bet doing that math is really eye-opening.

HMH Fuse and the future of K-12 mobile education on the iPad

One textbook in this style of presentation is fine but how do you sustain that level of production across hundreds/thousands of textbooks. Producing video, animation, etc costs way more than text. It's the CD-ROM/Interactive/Multimedia craze all over again. A total reinvention is what's needed now, not just a lot of bells and whistles.

Apple's cloud music service ready for launch

Apr 21st 2011 5:27PM (TUAW.com)
This seems kind of doomed in the U.S. unless AT&T/Verizon loosen up on unlimited data plans. Accessing your music/video/photos/etc from the cloud is great. Paying as you go for all that data sure isn't.

Dropbox under fire for security concerns (updated)

Apr 19th 2011 4:59PM (TUAW.com)
This is precisely the issue with any cloud-based service. You give up the absolute right to your data. Think any of these companies won't offer up all your 'private' data in a millisecond to a gov't subpoena or I'm guessing even a threat of a lawsuit from someone? Think again...
