Frustration at having to play multi-player in order to cap out galactic preparedness is not a miss-fire.
Yes I'll play it, but by allowing the "smurf berries" in the $5.99 companion app on IOS to grind preparedness tells me there is a lot of wiggle room in their opinions on what constitutes the "core" game experience.
The maps are decent, but the implementation of subscriber only maps has left much to be desired. Rotating between Liberation (sniper), Piazza (meat grinder), Overwatch (circle jerk), Village (meat grinder) and Dome (circle jerk) means more experience for Shotgun and Sniper builds. The downside is with no open firing lanes and less opportunity to flank groups that are moving through the back 40 there is also less chance of ending a bad match by cleaning up on kill streaks.
In other words, you're stuck with the bad teammates for at least another few minutes.
F2P models always remind me of the Tad Williams Otherland scene where Orlando/Thargor is investigating the Mage's tower. Girffen, that's an expensive guardian, but look at the rest of his cheap gear.
First MMO I played it happened almost instinctually. I overpulled some gnolls in Blackburrow and suddenly there was a warrior smashing around wildly. Later that day we moved to the other side of the mountain and bumped into an Erudite Enchanter who was dazing and dotting a pack of orcs. We strood there amazed, then starting chatting.
The next day we spent farming gear, zweihander maybe? After we had a dozen we set off east to find a market for them. Along the way we ran into a cleric trying to recover his body from a pack of red con mobs. Then it was four heading east. By the time we got to Faydark we had found the monk puller and were a regular group until the Scars of Vellious expansion.
My second game, SWG the group I'd play the game with walked through the door to my shop looking for a city hall plan. I became mayor and bankrolled the bulk of the group toward their Jedi grinds.
However, by the time Warcraft came in the idea of having to group together early in order to pool resources was gone from the industry.
