PSA: Only 2 episodes in 'full' version of Arkanoid Live [update]
May 12th 2009 4:46PM (Joystiq Xbox)How cool would it be to have a 800pt arcade game with 10 levels cost 80pts a level?
It would be the same cost as a normal arcade game, but if you only get halfway you only pay half the price. Pay only for the content you use.
If only they had been up front about this cost.
Namco bringing MagnaCarta 2 to US Xbox 360 owners
Apr 29th 2009 7:45PM (Joystiq)I'm kinda shocked that the 360 seems to have become the default RPG platform - now just for wRPGs (which was expected given last generation), but also for the jRPG crowd. I'm a bit of a wRPG fanboy, and never really cared for the jRPG game-style, but I'll admit that it's pretty nice to have them to play between wRPGs.
Right now I'm enjoying Last Remnant quite a lot. For a jRPG it's number of side quests and freedom to roam has really surprised me.
Sony theory: From PlayStation to Wii and back again
Apr 23rd 2009 4:45PM (Joystiq)One thing though... why are we all caring what system a soccer mum buys?
I don't actually want them on my lead platform, because the extra games they will encourage devalopers to make are not ones I want to play.
More to the point, PS3 has great games. Xbox has great games.
Sometimes the PS3 looks better, sometimes the Xbox looks better.
The PS3 has LBP. The 360 has Fable.
The PS3 has Killzone. The 360 has Fallout DLC.
Obvious answer here folks – get both.
Sony theory: From PlayStation to Wii and back again
Apr 23rd 2009 4:45PM (Joystiq)Now, the games often don't support that - but to be fair, not many games on either platform support that. It's not like all the PS3's games are 'true hi def' - in fact the only games that are 1080p are a tennis game and a few car games.
The ironic thing about the ‘hi-def’ ranting is that it’s really just harping on about resolution. At the end of the day, a good graphics filter make a much bigger difference. If changing from 720p to 1080p dramatically changes the look of your game, I humbly submit you are sitting too close to your tv.

Finally: The Xbox Live Community Game Index
Apr 22nd 2009 5:59PM (Joystiq Xbox)I certainly think that this site is a good thing. More than that, I’d say that it is a necessary thing. But, honestly, it’s something that the development community should have handled for themselves.
And while some folk may be trying to drum up attention, they aren’t doing a massively good job. Other the Joystiq and Joystiq Xbox, I also visit Evil Avatar, CoG and Kotaku – and I hardly see any self-promotion there.
If you have a great game, and can provide some great screenshots, there is no reason you can’t get your game out there.
I guess my argument is just that Microsoft has provided an amazing opportunity, which no other console manufacturer has ever provided before. Before this generation, no one would have thought that anyone would allow average users to publish content on a closed platform – let alone charge for them.
Lastly, as I am in New Zealand I have yet to buy any community content. Using a US account I can download trails, but not buy – which is super retarded as there is content from New Zealanders on there.
I have downloaded a lot of trials, and few stand out. There have been a few gems Id buy if I could – a few adventure games and one neat platform-rpg. Sadly, the gems are few and far in between.
There have been comments that the number of trial downloads far outweigh the copies actually brought. Perhaps instead of blaming the lack of a rating system, they should look at why people trying their games don’t want to buy.
And while I’m ranting, Joystiq Xbox doesn’t have that much stuff that is different from the main site. A ‘Community Game of the Week’ is exactly the kind of thing we should be seeing from the old Xbox Fanboy crew.
How ‘bout it, guys?

Apr 22nd 2009 4:20PM (Joystiq Xbox)Microsoft offer a (relatively) simple tool to create virtually any game, they allow you to let your programs into their closed network… and they let you charge for them.
Has any console maker ever made such concessions before? Did anyone ever think such a crazy thing would be allowed? Did I miss Sony’s amateur game club?
And we are harping on about ratings? Really?
Are these mini-developers somehow incapable of promoting their own games? Is it that hard to post a few screen shots and a description on a few forums? Seriously?
It’s not Microsoft’s problem to promote your games, people! They have given you a platform you can work with, not an all-expenses paid cruse to developer land.
It all sounds like; “Waah, I’ve made some crap flash game, and while everything has been provided for me, I wand someone to sell it for me too! Waaah!”
Broken Steel DLC makes Fallout 3 endless on May 5
Apr 21st 2009 6:46PM (Joystiq)Compared to most other DLC (Bring Down the Sky, Knothole Island, any of the many CoD or Halo '3 map' packs, etc), this DLC is a steal.
Broken Steel DLC makes Fallout 3 endless on May 5
Apr 21st 2009 6:35PM (Joystiq)Secondly, I’m not a fan of exclusive content, but if Microsoft did pay for this content, it’s not ‘unfair’. Sony has in the past, and continues to, pay for the development of exclusive software. To call out Microsoft for the same thing is disingenuous. From Little Big Planet to Infamous, Sony has admitted to paying to help development.
Sony says that they do not buy games, but lets me honest here; nobody ‘buys’ a game. Rather they all come to an agreement where a console ‘partner’ will wave fees, pay for development, handle advertising or offer some kind of supplemental support.
And lastly, there is still no proof of any kind that Microsoft did anything for this. Since Oblivion Bethsoft have noted both distaste for PS3 DLC, and disappointment in PS3 sales.
I’m not sure why everyone thinks that leaving the PS3 out of the DLC distribution is odd when much the same thing happened with Oblivion. It’s possible Beth just don’t like the PS3 in the same way that Insomniac is not interested in the Xbox.
At the end of the day, Fallout is a massive game even without DLC. I can’t get over the folk buying the DLC when they haven’t even completed everything the main game has to offer.
Chill. Relax. Chillax. PS3 owners, enjoy the game you have. PC/Xbox owners getting DLC doesn’t actually take anything away from your game.
The Guide: Community Organizing
Apr 2nd 2009 8:20PM (Joystiq Xbox)What I just read here, sounds like this:
"Waaaaaa! Microsoft have given us tools to make our own games, and for the first time EVER they are allowing my retarded creations into their closed platform. They are even letting me SELL my product over Live. But they aren’t doing all the hard work, advertising and selling for me! Waaaa!"
Seriously, call the waaaaaaaaaaambulance. Here’s an idea – think your game isn’t tripe. Hows about you visit a forums, post a few screen shots, share you ideas and vision. How about you try a little self-promotion? How about you shoot a few demos (I understand you can allow XNA games to run of PC) to Joystiq, Evil Avatar, Kotuku and the other blogging sites to build some hype?
How about you stop crying and get your ass out there?
Seriously, why do we always just sit about a cry until someone does it for you?
Welcome to capitalism, bitches.
