Rockstar says 'hell no' to Niko voice actor in Lost and Damned
Jan 26th 2009 10:52AM (Joystiq)While this is certainly the case for blockbuster films that feature a star's face, in most cases the actor's participation is irrelevant to my decision to buy. He or she just contributes to or decreases my enjoyment of the product based on his or her performance.
What I'm getting at is that the compensation model sought by unions assumes that the actor plays a significant role in making the entertainment product profitable. And in most cases this is simply not true. It's the combination of all the talents involved creating an enjoyable product. And in the case of video games, the lion share of the work is done by the programming and art team, so they should enjoy a majority of the profits.
And going further, when royalties come into play my head totally explodes. There is NO other business that continues to pay you royalties for work that you did in the past. Every legitimate business model out there pays you for services rendered with no future obligation. The only exception is, again, in a case-by-case basis where someone has the fame to license their identity for use. The idea that entertainment union members can continue to draw profits from a production that they neither risked investment in nor continue to work for is just plain ludicrous. It's a system designed to "keep the dream" alive for mediocre wanna-bes who dream of stardom.
That's my very strong opinion. Sorry for the rant.

Oct 1st 2008 1:19AM (Joystiq)The only trouble is, what would you win? You're already playing the game if you're making a level. Maybe as a twist, you could win a chance to post on one of the gamer sites.
This is getting confusing.
Burnout Paradise PS3 Trophies patch released, not retroactive
Sep 25th 2008 10:41AM (Joystiq)I agree that I love what they are doing in this game and certainly I understand if it doesn't work. But they REALLY should have said something sooner. There's simply no way they just discovered this yesterday. They must have known it wouldn't be possible for weeks.
This is especially disenheartening, considering how much effort I just put into my 40x stunt run and 20x burnout awards.
