I do not know about most of you but I have a feeling Nintendo is going to get access to that market share it has been looking for.
I recently found myself having some friends over and was a little stuck on what to play on the 360 because there are not that many 4 player games out there and I am sure that most people will want those for when they get their friends to come over. Little kids included.
As for Sony being able to get 2 million units out by November if they have not started manufacture that is going to be difficult. If they rush production I fear faulty units galore and quite a lot of money lost.
The relatively small number of units available at launch will probably be sold out no doubt. However it remains to see how fast production can keep up. Microsoft had to get some extra help to ramp up its production lines.
As a prediction I see Japan's units selling out, the US most probably although I am not entirely convinced. The European market might be a little cooler to the PS3. However I am sure the allocations will mean that Japan gets a higher number of units, US in second and Europe in 3rd.
End of 2006 1.Msoft 2.Wii 3.PS3 (that is units sold btw).
Mid 2007 I guess it will stay the same. Give the market a couple of years and figures will probably have a little more meaning. Microsoft has such a huge lead at the moment. Nintendo will have more consoles available in the short run and Sony have to play the catch up game.
Microsoft and Sony have almost reversed roles. Sony now has to play catch up.
Curses. My skills of jump kick are no longer what they used to be!
No point button mashing. Does not work in SF2. If only they had opted for Street Fighter 2 with the extra characters and costume colours. Nice to go back in time but it was cool having the full extra cast as well!
Oh well! Fun indeed and bring back MK as well as Killer Instinct please!
Well it seems to me that there is only one option! Rise of the machines! We are going to be getting more PC games!
Still cheap (relatively) to design for the PC :-)
On a more serious note, it is important for Sony supporters to realise that not every development company rolls around in cash.
Individual startups do have small teams, sometimes creative ones but that need to be able to launch a game on a budget. No bank in its right mind is going to shell out a huge loan given the risk.
After all, remember the guys at Eidos started up in a Garage in London, UK and they got majorly lucky. That said their fortunes almost went to waste with a string of unsuccesful follow up titles. Now they are back up (yippee!).
Markets are only now starting to go back into the high tech sector and still are a little iffy after the friendly descent in stock prices 5 years ago.
If development costs are high for a certain platform then you are going to kill Indie developers. That is why Xbox live market place and the WiiConnect24 thing (as well as Sony if they have an equivalent) are going to help. However if you are hoping to get the next Lara Croft or Super Mario on consoles where you need a multi million pound/dollar (even thousands) budget you are not going to have that many new developers.
As for all those saying that it is definitely going to crush Indie developers and small startups that is not necessarily true. If anything it may actually make games more interesting.
To get your idea out you need to have creativity, something that will get people hooked. The games initially may come out on a different platform and if it pays off well, then you get ports onto different platforms.
It is a double edged sword, the question is if all development costs for each platform rises to a level where no one can afford to develop for them (bar our usual crew), then we may all go back to retro gaming!
In response to the fanboyism:
Playing is believing! (Haha)
Seriously, judge the consoles when they are all out.
Glad to see I caused a stir. First I am not stupid.
Ok now to the serious point. I hate to tell you this but Nintendo on their own have had a history of launching consoles at $200 a pop. Check it, its been done since the NES and Joystiq had an article about console launches ages ago.
Second, Mac make huge profits on their machines. Markham is right.
The point I am trying to get across is that unfortunately, Mac has continuously tried to defy standards in hardware.
This cannot really apply to consoles because every console uses their own proprietary systems but it is an issue for PCs.
As for your comments about Macs being superior. Not necessarily true. I am not going to get into flame wars because I have better things to do and it would just end up with silly baseless facts on both sides.
Mac took the ipod, made it into something wonderful (I personally am not a fan). I acknowledged that they were pivotal in the digital revolution.
However they are not very creative in the games industry. They would take Nintendo shove an apple on it and probably just innovate the case. Big whoop!
The ipod has actually not changed all that much. Please do not rant and rave about video because that was out on mobile phones. The whole thing that Mac did and kudos to them was to bring out the simplicity.
I am not suggesting Nintendo merge with MSoft or Sony either! I want to see all three develop their ideas.
A fusion of two large companies can be detrimental and in my case, I would not particularly like to see Apple merge with Nintendo. Now if that offends any Apple fans out there I am sorry. We are all entitled to our own points of view.
Anywho, can someone remind me why we are debating an implausibility? We should maybe come back to this post Wii launch :-)!
If Apple bought Nintendo or merged with them, then I think I would rather not play games on a console again.
I can just see it now! DRM on your Wii, DS and Gameboy. White tacky plastic with a wheel to amuse the folk and call it intuitive.
I have nothing against the ipod, well done, it was a piece of kit that got people into a digital age. I do however find it overrated, annoying and itunes is definitely not on my list of favourite software.

New Street Fighter movie helmed by Doom director
Sep 7th 2007 2:58AM (Joystiq)Oh wait, no sorry this is Chun Li's story. So a spinning bird kick will become a cartwheel kick.
The original SF2 movie was entirely rubbish and I used to love it as a 5 year old. At least the anime had some form of plot!
As for the DOA movie at least it was eye candy.
