Dark Side 'Cause It Looks Cool: The Failings of Moral Choice in Games

Feb 10th 2012 8:02PM (Joystiq)
The Witcher 2 is where one of the biggest shifts in how the game plays out can be experienced, as in a 3 chapter game, chapter 2 is COMPLETELY different depending on a choice you make in chapter 1. Different area, different quests, different interactions and possibilities. Very brave of CDPR to do that, when most game design now tends to trend towards 'Well, we're spending money on this, so the player had better see it'.

Ringside has several Youtube remixes already. Some of which are amazing.

Phosphor Games' upcoming 'Awakened' looks powerfully promising

@Pugnaciousturtle I'm not making a fuss, I'm just providing an opinion. The game in its current state looks pretty bad. If the finished game is going to be nothing like this, then why release the video?

It's not like I'm wishing the game to fail, I'm just saying that from this admittedly early video it appears to be nothing special. Honestly, when I watched the video, there were no other comments and I thought that everyone would have a similar view.

If this goes on to sell a million and receive critical success then all power to it, but as it is I cannot see what the positive buzz is based on.

Early footage or not, I just can't see myself playing that. The very idea of it seems wholly taken in full from Prototype and InFamous (person gets accidental superpowers, then must fight THA GOV'NMINT in a present day military state), the choice to have a cover system and guns just says 'we are not wholly confident about the appeal of these superpowers'.

As a disclaimer, I must say that I wasn't tempted by aforementioned superpower games either, as I don't think the realistic present day is a particularly interesting setting for that kind of gameplay. Post-apoc? Fine. Steampunk? Hit me. 4-colour/silver age idealised cartoony-ness? Sure, go for it.

It looks like a completely average game, and I am calling a Metacritic score of 73 right here and now. Also, I am fond of pooping in the cake mix of dreams.

After having played Magicka, I don't think I'm going to be satisfied with very many superpower based stories for a while, on the basis that they can't be as fun as that magic system is.

Also, this looks really depressingly average. Enemies standing still and shooting rock-man, standard cover system present and correct(-ish), people in normal clothes wandering through hails of bullets and explosions and not even reacting. Sloppy animations too.

After things like Prototype and Infamous, games with a similar premise have got to try a lot harder than this looks like it is.

More Sega Genesis classics added to Steam

Alien Soldier, Landstalker and Gunstar Heroes were enough for me to drop £5.50 on the bundle. So annoyed that TJ+E and its sequel are £3.99 each though.

How much are people in the US paying for the 'premium' games such as the aforementioned funky aliens and the Sonic games? $6.36 seems steep.
