Why? Because if I just wanted to sit and watch cutscenes all day I'd go to the movies, or at least play a Final Fantasy game. Say what you want about story, but in the end you play games to have fun, not to marvel at how many polygons it took to make Snake's 70s porn star moustache.
"Every time a new video of Metal Gear Solid 4 pops up, our mouths get all watery with anticipation for this game."
Meh, I'm not sure why. It's not like they've actually shown us any actual gameplay yet. Yes, it's really really pretty, we've known that for a while now. But if it plays exactly the same as the last 3 iterations, is there really that much point to the eyecandy?
The games industry used to show their wares at CES, but left to form E3 (partially because of the stony reception they got from the other exhibitors). Why would they suddenly come back?
Exactly. For most people $500/600 toy (and that's what all consoles are- toys) is not a justifiable expense. If you think the PS3 will "dominate" based solely on the upper/upper-middle class, then you haven't been paying very close attention to just how wide gaming's demographic has become. Games are for everyone now, and if you price your hardware outside of the middle and lower-middle class, you've just alienated a large chunk of your potential market. That doesn't sound like a recipe for domination to me.
sockatume: "the Immersion patents Sony were found to infringe were filed in 2000 and 2001."
Were they applied for in those years, or was that when they were granted? It sometimes takes several years for a patent to be granted. The American patent system is most definitely broken, but if Sony/Logitech's prior art was that clear, they would've won their lawsuit.

Sony pulled rumble from PSOne controllers?
Jul 11th 2006 1:58AM (Joystiq)The Japanese Dual Analog controller did have rumble, but it only featured one motor. Wikipedia has a good article about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dual_Analog_Controller
