Yeah, "Metroidvania" pretty much just refers to the genre of platforming games where the entire world is open and inter-connected and you progress by gaining new abilities to access new areas. It doesn't have to include a combination of Metroid and Castlevania elements.

It DOES seem kind of unfair that Castlevania gets to be a part of the genre name when SotN (1997) came out so long after the original Metroid (1986).
