Older Apple iOS devices must jailbreak to be secure -- oh the irony

Aug 14th 2010 2:30AM (Engadget)
@saurik You just have to look to find them:
http://web.nvd.nist.gov/view/vuln/search-results?cid=3

Now the second half of your post about botnets I didn't really understand, probably would be easier to read of it was split into multiple sentences. I suspect you were making note of Apple's userbase still running iOS 3 being large enough to be worth making a botnet out of, but I just want to point out that there really aren't that many original iphones still in use (as a phone), so I suspect as usual the threat is overblown (wow, big surprise there). Meanwhile, Google allows malicious software to appear on the Android store on a scarily regular basis.

Apple may be readying a security update for iOS 3.1.3 devices as we speak They are likely using the 90/10 rule, putting resources into parching the largest user base first. If Engadget were any kind of real journalistic source of news, they would have likely approached Apple for comment. But they're not. They are simple hit-whores who would rather stir the flame war pot and put up sensational headline than care about anything unimportant like facts or the truth.

Older Apple iOS devices must jailbreak to be secure -- oh the irony

@madgunde Oh, really should add, how long has Android been on the market? Not even 2 years, and the first devices that were released can't even update past Android 1.5 or 1.6. Even Apple's iPhone 3G which is over 2 years old can be udpated to the latest version of iOS.

Wake up and smell what you people are shovelling already. Bloody Apple haters.

Right. So Apple is being bashed for not supporting devices that are more than 2 years old with the latest OS patches, but nobody bitches that most Android phone makers don't even properly support 6 month old to 1 year old hardware with the latest Android OS updates?

Hmmm, pot calling the kettle black it seams. Sorry Apple haters, but any way you want to spin this, Apple still provides better OS update support than pretty much the majority of smartphone makers.

Buying an iPhone 4 from a Canadian carrier? It's locked

Wow Engadget, what part of "Buy your iPhone from the Apple Online Store…" do you not understand?

Geniuses, the lot of you.

Apple shows Nokia's N97 Mini can be force choked, too (video)

Jul 21st 2010 11:49AM (Engadget)
@balazamon0 Maybe you're in an area with good coverage. The problem only really shows itself when in a weak signal area because the bars on a phone only indicate signal strength necessary to make a call, not total/maximum signal strength. In other words, your phone only starts to show fewer bars normally when the signal strength is in the bottom 20% or so of max. signal strength.

@DingoJunior Sorry, but all the demonstrations of the iPhone 4 attenuation showed people using a "death grip" which is where the term was popularized. I never once saw a claim that it occurred while only putting one finger on the "spot" and besides, by your argument, nobody holds a phone by one finger, that would be extremely awkward!

Face it, it's a non-issue for all smartphones or it's a giant issue for all smartphones. It's one or the other, this is not specific to the iPhone 4.

@Zob the iPhone 4's dropped calls due to attenuation only occur in areas of weak signal, that's why most people in good coverage areas can't even replicate the problem. Stop spreading FUD.

@strawe Sorry, not it isn't petty. Nokia and every other major smartphone company tried to pretend this was an iPhone 4 only problem and were happy to squeeze a few extra sales out of the media feeding frenzy that Apple was bearing.

Any company that responded to Apple's claim that it affects many other smartphones from every major brand deserves the crow they're having to eat now.

Besides, as consumers, shouldn't we be happy that this info is coming to light? Otherwise you might buy another smartphone assuming it's not affected by attenuation and be sadly disappointed when it is.

Besides, Apple's also taking deserved cheap shots at tech blogs and the media for singling them out and blowing this crap way out of proportion. I'm just glad Engadget is not burying these details.

Windows Phone 7 in-depth preview

God that UI is but ugly and WAY too swipe intensive. Not to mention, their poor judgement on font colours in some places. Watched the video and on the home screen and I think in the Zune app, you can't even read the white text superimposed on the background image.

Fail.

iPad 3.2.1 update released

Jul 15th 2010 6:59PM (TUAW.com)
No, Apple specifically said iOS 4 for iPad wasn't coming until Fall. November is I believe the more specific timeframe.

So many people overuse the word promise. I've been following Apple closely for a really long time (20+ years) and I have yet to see Apple promise anything to anyone. They endeavor, make claims and announce, but never promise.

Seconded. Unfortunately, we'll have to wait until November apparently.
