Jun 2nd 2010 9:32AM (Engadget)@Everyone here.
Decided to throw in a few words or two since a comparison is being made between Flash & HTML. Gentlemen, I want to believe that all of you already now what I'm about to say. Since most of us here are informed.
HTML is a markup language. Not a programming language (scripting languages included ). HTML will not suddenly become a "scripting language". The difference IS FUNDAMENTAL. If HTML were so powerful the use of Java and Javascript would have went the way of the dodo bird a LONG time ago.
Truth of the matter is this: HTML5 is a new standard (that is at least 3 years from release candidate, heck some parts of it won't be finished for almost a decade). This new standard will include certain capabilities such as displaying videos and other functions which a programming language like Flash used to be needed.
But Flash isn't just a video player plugin. It's not a codec. It is a language that enables people to create rich User Interfaces. I'm no Adobe evangelist but I frankly just don't see HTML5 somehow having the capability to create a video player as rich as what Hulu is doing. Yes HTML5 will have the capability to display a video. However it will not have the capability to create rich user interface for said video. Obviously javascript or some other scripting language can alleviate this but nonetheless you get my point.
Another big point is this: Flash isn't just a Video Player / User Interface creation tool. Flash is used to create INCREDIBLE website interfaces. HTML5 is simply a markup language. It will not replace Flash capability of Interface creation.
Check out this site I found through a book I bought: http://casestudies.labforculture.org/flash/main.php
The day HTML is capable of creating a site as rich as that one is the day you can kiss Flash and many other scripting languages goodbye.
FYI: that day isn't even in the next 15 years. Scripting languages aren't going to be replaced by HTML in the near future.
