Sony: 'Don't use your PS3' until internal clock bug is fixed

The internal clock can think the 29th of Feb exists due to a simple maths error in its programming.
This is the first even numbered non-leap year for example which may be why its manifesting for the first time now.
The front end and the DRM/Trophy subroutines know that there cant be a 29/02/10 or 02/29/10 (for wherever you live in the world) so are throwing up an error which is preventing validation of DRM and trophies.

Sony: 'Don't use your PS3' until internal clock bug is fixed

It looks like at 0000GMT on 28/02/2010 the RTC threw a date time error, probably 29/02/2010 which of course doesn't exist, which has caused the front end to go bonkers and fail to validate DRM and Trophies. The front end will use the RTC and add/subtract time according to timezone. When it sees 29/02/2010 it gets upset because that date doesn't exist.
The trophies validation problem seems to affect some games to the point they can't be played and other games have their trophy data removed locally.
A simple fix that is most definately NOT recommended and I stress do NOT do this unless you are mental, is cracking your PS3 open and removing the RTC battery to reset the clock.
Sony are probably expecting it to tick over to 01/03/2010 tomorrow which will mean everything will work again. Then we will probably see a firmware update so the front end accounts for the lost day.

Fingers crossed it fixes itself though.
