To address what bm111 is saying, I think he means that Enslaved (and newer games in general I guess) tend not to present the player with a "choice" when traveling through the level. You're presented with a set, strict platforming path to get from point A to point B, with no real options to deviate from said path to reach the goal. Hence, a straight line.
Now while the original RE and Metroid games still required you to obtain a specific item (key, ball form, etc.) to move past certain checkpoints, the player was free to explore a vast number of other locations and directions as well. In this exploration, there would often be a different reward altogether (like ammo, or missle upgrades). In that sense, the player is presented with multiple, non-linear paths to choose from.
