The Queue: CSI Theramore

A follow-on to today's first question: How is the average item level actually calculated?

I was under the impression that it went by the gear you have equipped, however last night I upgraded an ilevel 200 trinket to one that was ilevel 272 or thereabouts. It didn't increase the average item level reported by the dungeon finder at all. Are trinkets not counted?

After doing some googling I found people saying that it calculates based off the highest ilevel item you have for a particular inventory slot, regardless of whether or not you have it equipped, which doesn't seem to make any sense to me at all.
