These guys have got to be under some serious pressure. Hardcore CS players are some of the biggest assholes I've met in regards to updates and changes made to their game so I can imagine these guys have got to be feeling some heat. I seriously wish them the best of luck.
This works out perfectly for them. Most DRM nowadays is really only about delaying piracy, and this way they get to have had DRM on when it launched in order to accomplish that, while still looking like they care by patching it out later on.
The first paragraph made me realize how long 14 years can actually be. I wonder how many of the bright-eyed kids that pre-ordered DNF so long ago are now world-weary adults?
If you ask me, I think TV movies might be a better venue for game-to-movie adaptations. There's probably not as much executive meddling and they won't just go for the biggest name they can find who will probably screw up the property once they get their hands on it (for a recent example, see the upcoming Uncharted movie).
