BAFTA names Mass Effect 2 as game of the year, reveals all winners for 2011

@polygone shotgun

I'm a fan of Assassin's Creed, but you can't deny that some of those later missions had a number of technical hiccups (not to mention narrative ones).

And, some of the 100% synch challenges exposed the weak points of the game design. That tank mission? Don't even try to tell me that full completion on that mission was MEANT to be as hard as it was.

Ken Levine explains why BioShock Infinite isn't photorealistic

Aug 12th 2010 5:49PM (Joystiq)
@greyseal

I completely agree with you. I think others' confusion about whether or not Uncharted is photorealistic proves Levine's point perfectly. Uncharted is most definitely a stylized game but, because it's stylized in ways that are perfectly suited for the game, it only draws players in and never distracts.

You could never achieve that in a game that strives for photorealism because photorealism is literally impossible. Attempting photorealism only ties the hands of the game's art designers and distracts the player.

Besides, reality is boring. That's why we play games.

IGN: Six Days in Fallujah complete, awaiting release [update: it's true!]

I totally agree with copa and LaughingTarget. Guys: I want to compliment you two on making a very calm, reasonable explanation of why this game is potentially such a problem.

Personally, I'd love to see a war game that is as carefully scripted and emotionally mature as Heavy Rain. That'd be one hell of an experience. One day, maybe... one day...

(And LaughingTarget: I may not agree with your opinion on The Hurt Locker, but I agree with your taste in anime. Row row fight the powah!)

PSA: Print some not-terrible Heavy Rain box art

Sweet. It's the best of both worlds: The European art with the American logo.

...but, yeah, back to playing the game now.

US Heavy Rain box art attempts sex appeal

Thanks SCEA. For a supposedly mature game, the L00K BEWBS approach to boxart is disappointing and more than a little insulting.

Have we learned nothing from Uncharted? The women in that game are likable without having to resort to T&A.

New Modern Warfare: Airport Murder Simulator 2 video game glorifies terrorism

Activision's statement suggests that this level will be a sort of "devil's advocate" sequence, where the player is forced to perpetrate the very evil that he or she is trying to prevent. Of course, in order to recognize such nuance, you'd have to give the gaming industry the benefit of the doubt, so this insight will prove meaningless to the major media outlets.

As for me, if this is indeed the correct reading of the developers' intent, I am fascinated by this idea. It seems like this could be a very emotional and intense sequence to play though. I look forward to finding out for myself if this is all as brilliant and artistically valid as it sounds.

BioShock 2 washes up on shore Feb. 9, 2010

@KenSharp

Okay, so "blind" may have been overstating it, but I think my point is getting lost here. Although I suppose I am partly to blame for making my comment sound so inflammatory (sorry, I'm a bit disillusioned after yesterday's Yellow Light of Death comment thread bloodbath).

What I'm trying to say is that people have decided to buy this game with insufficient knowledge to inform the decision (and, yes, the haters are being equally rash). This game is of suspect quality, so I think it would benefit everyone to stop with the fanboyism and wait to evaluate the game on its own merits (yes, although he totally misinterpreted my comments, I agree with Ryguy226).

I apologize if I started a thing. It was kind of the opposite of my intentions.

I don't know, maybe you guys have more money to burn than I do, but I can't afford to buy every game that I have a good feeling about. I need to have some idea that what I'm buying is going to be worth the price (you know, beyond what the marketing campaign is saying).

@CaramelZappa
Very few people from the original game are working on this one. This game's a total crapshoot at this point.
