Mar 9th 2012 12:08PM (Joystiq)Etrian Odyssey was often described as a tribute or throwback to older Wizardry-style dungeon-crawlers, and while it does have many of the hallmarks of this genre, it still has an identity and passion of its own. It shows through in the music and enemy design, even the layout of the dungeons (at least in the first game).
Rayman Origins may also have a zest to it that isn't really about "Oh I wish it was still 1994!" but more like it's actually looking forward (as best it can), just as games from 1994 were doing.
If you aren't looking forward then I don't know how you can truly be imaginative and passionate as a designer or artist, or even as a businessman. I don't see how someone can be excited about purely making a throwback, unless it is just the time travel that interests them.
I sometimes wonder if commentators and editorialists, game journalists and the like, don't have better ideas -- a better vision -- for games than the game makers themselves. The game makers seem to be increasingly listening to the fans for ideas, such as David Jaffe taking direct input from fans for what to include in the next Twisted Metal patch.
In other words I could see Kat Baily or Jeremy Parish designing better RPGs than Squaresoft or Atlus.
Another example of fan input being welcomed in the creation of a new game is Wasteland 2, with Brian Fargo setting up a Google Moderator page for people to pitch ideas.
