Wrong. All Online Pass games from EA come with at least 2 days to trial the online features for free for everybody, which should be fine for a rental. I've not played a game from another publisher that uses similar unlock codes to know if it is true for those too.
For me, I buy new, don't tend to trade-in and if I want a game cheap, I wait for a sale, so OP doesn't really affect me.
