I dunno, there are plenty of games with abstract graphics that people love. Sounded like he was defending against complaints that hadn't yet been made, for some reason.

Also: since when are anime fans known for taking chances on refreshing new ideas? I mean, the genre's more than little bit insular - I'm sure they'd be receptive to new things, but all they get are riffs on a few basic premises, poor guys.
