Hang a sec, though - even if the YouTuber in question isn't making money, won't the company just argue that they are "losing" money somehow? If I was a soulless corporate hack, I'd claim that infinity-plus-one people didn't buy my company's masterpiece (entitled Halo Fantasy 4, for argument's sake) because they had seen the plot on the defendant's Let's Play video. I mean, remember what the RIAA does with music downloads? They claim they're losing money from such things even though the odds are that most of the downloaders wouldn't have acquired the songs in the first place if they hadn't been free. It's not much of a stretch to see a similar sort of logic being applied here, with non-extant "lost profits" being used as the main force for the prosecution.
I figure if I can figure out how to screw people over with this law, a lawyer'll definitely try.
@i am a guy How many times can you get raped and beaten to death in 5 years? I imagine it's rather a lot (fun fact: many if not most American prisons are for-profit hellholes). Also, 5 years is a minimum - if your YouTube clip of your toddler son dancing to a Dream Theater song gets more than 5 views, god help your posterior.
But hey, I'm sure the notoriously inhuman records industry will go easy on us. It's not like they've abused BS laws like this in the past or anything, right?
Oh, and I can totally see this passing. Who gives boatloads money to politicians: you, or the RIAA? Who do you think actually has a voice in the government: you, or the people that fund re-election campaigns? Who do you think can get away with basically anything up to and including murder and rape (if done overseas): you, or monolithic corporations?
Tell ya what, though: when we all get sent to prison 20 years, I'm up for forming a coast-to-coast biker gang. We could profit by selling USBs full of N64 Let's Plays to media junkies in dark alleyways. Where there's illegality, there's room for massive profit, right? =P
@Odog4ever They could get Netflix or consume their media through the sundry other non-advertoverloaded (this is now a word) channels available to the discerning customer. There are ways to get away from the most interesting man in the world!
@Seasqwaa Weeell, based on the review it does sorta seem like it's just a tad trapped in the past, only it's the past circa RE4 gameplay-wise and the past circa From Dusk 'Till Dawn sensibility-wise. Which I can totally get behind, if you know what I'm saying (I'm saying that I think the game sounds entertaining).
Like most everyone, I'm not sure about this. RE has been an... interesting franchise, to put it mildly; it's infamous for a lot of terribad decisions, but has also had plenty of top-notch gameplay (I have never played RE5, so don't hate me if that one fell short). When they took a risk (hell, took TONS of risks) with RE4, it paid off in a big way. For my part, I thought part of that was the initial atmosphere of the village being amazingly new and eerie; Raccoon City is neither of these (skyscrapers just don't creep me out). However, I look forward to seeing what they manage to pull off in this one - maybe playing as one of the absurdly wacky RE villains will be fun!
@Dacx By wearing reasonable body armor, then shooting their silly, silly faces, laughing all the while at the man who brought a knife to a gun fight? =P I keed, but you've gotta admit that stabbing a properly geared soldier in the back seems a mite ineffective. Go for the throat!
Lookin' good so far. Here's to hoping that they allow you to disable all those pop-up score display things (which seems likely enough) and that they keep things realistic when it comes to being shot and shooting (liked the tactical reload thing they showed, for example, and that enemies actually died when being shot instead of completely ignoring bullet wounds a la Far Cry 2).
Senate Bill 978 not much of a danger to YouTube game runthroughs
