Anybody Can Learn a Second Language

Dec 16th 2010 6:54PM (Asylum)
This is the exact method that many schools and programs are starting to implement when it comes to learning a second language. It's simple, amazingly fast, and best of all effective. It's the same sort of method that programs like Rosetta Stone implement.

Mostly classic rock (Beatles, Joe Walsh, Kinks, Buddy Holly, The Who, The Smiths, The Velvet Underground [more specifically Lue Reed] &c.), blues (B.B. King, Taj Mahal, Fred McDowell, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Robert Johnson, Mississippi John Hurt, &c.), folk/anti-folk (Bob Dylan, Regina Spektor, A Fine Frenzy, Feist, Fiona Apple, Joan Osborne, Cat Stevens, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Carla Bruni, &c.), classical (Bach, Mozart, Corelli, Muffet, Handel, Berlioz, &c.) , jazz (swing to bebob. Everything). Love Miles Davis, Armstrong, Joe Zawinul, Billie Holiday, Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Fats Waller, Bela Felck, Count Basie, Thelonious Monk, &c.), alternative (They Might Be Giants is one of the best bands of all time, mixing that in with The Gorillaz, Franz Ferdinand, CAKE, Sleigh Bells, Radiohead, Talking Heads and others), Punk (Ramones, Tonio K., Be Your Own Pet, X, Flogging Molly, Against Me!, The Clash, &c.), Ska (The Aquabats!, The Toasters, Madness, The Mighty Mighty Bosetones Streetlight Manifesto, &c.), and I throw in just about everything in-between as well (country, bluegrass, electronica, opera, hip-hop/rap, R&B, tribal, &c.).

Nielsen study: People don't like 3D glasses

Sep 10th 2010 10:12PM (Joystiq)
They just suck to wear over my spectacles. They hurt and rest further down on my nose causing an improper fit (the reason I hate RealD as well). I tend to wear headphones while gaming as not to disturb others, and I cannot imagine those on top of two pairs of glasses.
But maybe it's just me, after all I still insist that a two channel system beats out any home theater system.

Las Vegas Is America's Most Stressed-Out City

Aug 19th 2010 7:21PM (Asylum)
I can agree with that. The economy is terrible here, with unemployment almost reaching 14% at times, and there really isn't any hope as of now.

As a college student, I find it harder and harder to make it through school. Being a youth, I have never found it important to work a paying job up until this point (I volunteered instead). Now though, the teens who are looking to put themselves through college are getting the shortest hand, as there are over-qualified people begging on their knees for even a part time job.

My dad works at NY, NY and MGM has been taking funds out of retirement plans, and my family has been going on quite a tight budget recently.

The tourism industry has sunk since the economy tilted, and big business started to pull their company outings. It's quite amazing going to take pictures of the strip on a Friday night and finding sidewalks empty at times. It's strange, and depressing.

To make matters worse, there is a huge political struggle in the state itself. North vs. South, and by that the state vs. Clark county. So this just add more onto the cake.

I'm not really surprised at all this spot was snagged. Just look at all the stories in the news about the state of Las Vegas.

I can only hope for the future of this city, but right now things are doubtful.

Anti-Pinball Law Shuts Down N.Y. Arcade

Aug 13th 2010 1:05PM (Asylum)
The reason why there are so many laws on the books against pinball isn't because of arcades being synonymous with gang hang-outs, it more has to do with gambling. When pinball was reaching its fame in the late 30's and really making a breath through, many of the large manufacturers such as Bally's made the decision to compete directly against slot machines, a decision they would soon regret. Throughout the 40's and 50's laws were passed all over the nation against pinball of all sorts, and continued to be enforced even after the days after production stopped from "gambling" machines. This however didn't matter to most cities, as they saw the "free play" as sort of a gamble (a game has value that you can win via play). Even in Chicago the founding place of pinball had it outlawed up until the mid-70's (I believe it was 1973). Other cities since have slowly lifted this ban, around the 70's and 80's when pinball fever took hold once more! Alas, there still several cities who have not make a change to the law, as there really wasn't a need too.

We have the Pinball Hall of Fame in Las Vegas, a pinball museum and arcade, it's a wonderful place with pretty much every great machine (and some extremely rare ones) from the entire history of pinball. I really hope this thing in NY gets sorted out, I'd love to see more retro arcades/pinball halls pop up around the nation so that everyone can enjoy the classic pinball experience.

I bet they sound terrible, but they are totally worth it. Looks like a perfect set to mod some Koss KSC75 drivers into.
