My colleague's eight year old kid knows how to take an SD card out of a phone, put it in a laptop, and copy pictures to send to her friends. Yet the iThings, as intuitive as they are in almost every other respect, turn the simple act of file transfers into a hellish ordeal of utter kludginess.

Whatever happened to the shared directory that mounted as a hard drive when iPad was plugged in? Wasn't that part of the original 3.2? Why did Apple take this out before launch? Was it too sensible?

No - I don't need another iThing that has to sync, interminably, insufferably, inexplicably with iTunes on another PC. SET THE IPAD FREE!

A key point for me is whether this will be yet another device that needs to sync with iTunes. If I have to sit around interminably updating firmware, transferring huge applications back and forth...a process that already annoys the hell out of me on my iPhone - then no sale, brother. No sale.

Kernel change, shmernel change. For a web browser point release to require a complete system restart is absurd and Microsoftian.

Filtering the signal through Barbara Mandrell makes all the difference.
