Earth Defense Force 2025 adds another cheesy chapter to D3's bug book

Hey Japan, stop making me save the world
Nov 4th 2011 4:56PM (Joystiq)Basically, there are 2 kinds of saving the world plots: One where the characters set out to save the world, and one where the character set out to do something else and end up saving the world in the process.
Grand Theft Auto V trailer is here!
Nov 4th 2011 3:51AM (Joystiq)Eeh. I understand that it wasn't supposed to have the most realistic physics, but there was still something off about how understeer/oversteer worked. Additionally, it seemed like even the fastest cars in the game couldn't go much faster than 120 mph. If it looks like a Ferrari, it should feel like its going at least 160 at top speed. Tire grip and weight and momentum physics were pretty spot on though.
Still, it was better than Midnight Club LA. That has the worst driving physics I've ever experienced in a game that used polygons instead of sprites.
Gran Turismo 5 officially getting update, DLC, and a price drop
Oct 6th 2011 1:43AM (Joystiq)- The standard cars will still look the same on the outside, and the interior views are one of several 'generic' cockpits. Although some cars will get original and true to life interiors.
- There is a new opening cinematic
- You can now have multiple suspension/tranny/drivetrain/etc setups for a car
- Online mode changes

Sep 24th 2011 8:40PM (Joystiq)The hidden costs of PlayStation Vita: 3DS-esque battery life and mandatory memory cards
Sep 15th 2011 3:09PM (Joystiq)This reminds me of the time when the GameGear was much more powerful than the Game Boy but sold poorly because the battery life sucked and most of the games were ports of console games.
I can't say the 3DS is in that much of a better position though.
Roland Emmerich beats us to the punch, passes on Asteroids movie
Sep 15th 2011 2:51PM (Joystiq)I mean, I half expect Asteroids to suck anyway, but half expecting it is better than a guarantee.
NYT: Video-game companies take lucrative advantage of US tax code, especially EA
Sep 12th 2011 2:00AM (Joystiq)However, nothing they are doing is illegal, and the only thing that's in any way shady or unethical about it is the lobbying they do to keep the tax breaks. In the NYT article, it stated that companies doing so much to take advantage of subsidies they are eligible for is really no different than your average consumer taking advantage of BOGO or liquidation sales; its foolish NOT to take advantage of it.
Where i will cry foul is how they play it off. They could plainly state that they are trying to take advantage of these subsidies simply because they can, and that they lobby so they dont lose something that saves them a lot of money. They could get away with it too. but they try to justify it by saying that they have a bigger impact on the world than we think they do and its not about entertaining people, but making the world a better place and thinking of the children and blah blah blah.
I will say this, less returns on R&D = less R&D = less money spent on developing new IPs and conceps = more sequels and less original content.
It's a double-edged sword, i tell ya.
One last thing: the NYT article also states that these tax breaks aren't part of some big-business shenanigans brought in during the Clinton Bush or Obama eras; these were actually put in place in the 50s and 60s to keep technology and software companies on top of their game during the Cold War. The videogame industry was just able to apply itself to both these and tax breaks for the entertainment industry put in place in the 70s and 80s.
