CD Projekt demands Witcher 2 pirates pay up, '100% sure' it's targeting properly

Dec 16th 2011 6:53PM (Joystiq)
@Chiren Sure, and as much as I'd like to see the whole industry radically evolve, within the way it currently works Valve have earned my loyalty in a variety of ways. Just because I have an opinion about the nature of the industry does not mean I have to hate everyone in it. Look up Gabe Newell talking about piracy on youtube (can't remember the specific interview, sorry) - I feel he has a much more positive and healthy attitude than many in the industry, not to mention the fact that Steam is the kind of DRM which has in my personal experience added positively to my gaming experience rather than deteriorated it, as more than a few other methods from other companies have done.

CD Projekt demands Witcher 2 pirates pay up, '100% sure' it's targeting properly

I'm discontinuing my shopping at GOG because of this. I am not interested in pirating games (I'm a satisfied Steam user and occasional hard-copy shopper) but I don't support this kind of action. The only way to eliminate "piracy" is to acknowledge that rapid data copying and sharing is the nature and power of the internet, and adjust business models accordingly. Threats, legal action and disproportionate fines are just fueling problems with more negativity, all the while maintaining ignorance towards the bigger picture. We collectively benefit when we share. Period. Business needs to find a smart way to embrace that and benefit from it as well. Our concepts of intellectual property are outdated and dysfunctional.

South Park's fifth character class is the 'Jew'

Dec 14th 2011 6:23PM (Joystiq)
South Park provides a valuable service to us all. Getting offended is basically voluntarily placing your ego under the stomping foot of reality. Once you rely on people talking about you in a certain way to be happy, you've dug a nice hole for yourself and jumped in. Cultivate some self-worth and it's water off a duck's back. You might even get a good laugh out of a joke that would ruin an ego-noob's day.

Garriott talking with EA about Ultima Online 2 [update: apparently not]

Dec 14th 2011 4:56AM (Joystiq)
I've certainly dug some Ultima over the years, but lets be honest, the setting itself is just generic fantasy\medieval. Nothing remotely unique enough to get hung up over holding onto the IP. What is special about the Ultimas is how the setting was realized, the approach he took to turning the setting into an interactive experience.

If Garriott wants to make another awesome game he hardly needs the Ultima IP to do it. He should come up with something else. It could even be another generic fantasy world, if that's what he's into, without infringing on Ultima IP.

Bethesda: Nobody enjoys being 'forced' to sue Mojang

Oct 9th 2011 12:40AM (Joystiq)
Forced? Hah. This crap is so prevalent. "We had to protect our shareholders! No choice!". Business is so bloated with legalese these days that CEOs forget that they are PEOPLE interacting with PEOPLE, and that they can make, you know, CHOICES to go in this or that direction with their companies..

I guess we'd better never make a game, write a book, direct a film, stitch a quilt, or ANYTHING that uses the word "Scrolls" for the rest of time. Now that we've got that sorted, who wants to fight me for exclusive rights to the word "The"? My weapon of choice is a juicy halibut.

Hurry up and let me pre-order this baby on Steam!

Game-streaming service Happy Cloud launching this month

Cool concept. With disk space and faster and less bandwidth restricted internet access becoming more prevalent and cheaper all the time though, the difficulty of downloading whole games is dissipating (if it hasn't already) for what I would assume is most gamers. Could really take off in the casual space though.

Dishonored is Arkane's next title, with Deus Ex and Half-Life 2 veterans

Sounds tasty. I predict this game will find itself on my steam list as soon as it is able.

Valve will release Dead Air early ... if 20K people unlock this Left 4 Dead 2 achievement

Jul 6th 2011 10:15PM (Joystiq)
@Spectrus If you purchase it through steam and are in Australia, yes, actually. I think a friend of mine had it bought and gifted to him by an American steam user, and that apparently has worked for him, but I have my doubts that is even possible for me now that I already have it in my account and purchased in Australia.

Oh well. I'm almost as sick of zombies as I am of shooting people.
