New Backbreaker trailer promises 'next-level' football

Jan 8th 2010 7:33PM (Joystiq)
Well is the cost of a consulting company to do custom-programming as part of your game-design team less expensive than hiring actors or reusing old motion capture data? That's the big question. I was going back and referring to the fact that it seems like they're advertising something revolutionary with Euphoria, which maybe they are, as something it's not; a solution like Havok where it's almost plug-n-play.

tmacairjordan87, you missed the guy's comment before you, but that doesn't show Euphoria is an engine, it shows it is some kind of game-specific technology which makes things feel pain.

That's what it's supposed to do at least. I still don't quite know if it's used like that. It could just be a team of animators working with Endorphin and making certain things work in realtime with smooth programming. There might not be an actual Euporia engine in that, it would have to be custom-programmed per game. That'd also explain why it's always implemented differently such as magnetic hands vs drunk people. It seems like it's a lot of custom stuff going on whereas their marketing team likes to say it's all like magic, and it's this super thing you just inject into your code. Do you get what I mean? You can't just buy the license to the Euphoria engine, you have to have the Natural Selection team make it work specifically for your game. That's what I'm pointing at and where my suspicions are.

I actually messed around with it when I first saw it. It still felt really linear to me. Most of the rest was ragdoll. I'll say that portion is my opinion though. Thanks for being less derogatory and bringing in some evidence.

No matter what I said about Euphoria, the trailer still looked really stupid.

If what you claim is true, that Euporia is actually something that isn't a bunch of animators, show me some hard evidence. I want proof showing otherwise that does not come from the company's marketing material. Do that before you choose to rank my comment down.

Euphoria's a bunch of blah. It's all lies. I don't see technology, I see animations and a bunch of magnetic hands. The video seems to present itself as kill and lots and lots of hurtful tackles yet it is anti-climactic and doesn't make me feel anything other than "they don't realize how stupid this looks".

This is pretty astounding. And it's simple and easy to do. Of course there could be more vivid ways to do this, but it looks pretty darn awesome they way 2D games are realized in 3D. It's just a neat different perspective. To me, it's as if I'm looking at games if our PC systems were more powerful in the 80s.

It'd be funny if it was gaudy, but it's really not that big guys.
