Are we sure that shirt Light's wearing is from the men's collection... ?

Report: Capcom sees 'no distinction' between on-disc and off-disc DLC

Apr 3rd 2012 3:19PM (Joystiq)
I don't get the fury. Capcom sold the consumer a full package, but then withheld a premium package which they made available for more money. It sounds like you're just making decision whether to buy a "premium" edition or remain content with the regular edition. How is this any different than Day One DLC that comes with a collector's edition? You are essentially paying more for a deeper gaming experience and like, a dagger or something.

Illuminating Penny Arcade's On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness 3

I'm down for this. But I mourn the loss of the look Hothead Games came up with for the first two episodes. Part of the appeal of that world was in the attention to detail. It was so very steam punk and I'm just not feeling the same vibe from the preliminary screenshots. Then again, they can probably add a lot more variety since the weapons/armor/magic are now to be rendered in 8bit.

Fez hits XBLA on April 13 for 800 MSP

@IRONSAM

I'm in the same boat. If only there were a game about Fez and Phil Fish that explained the whole thing. I would play that 6 years later and learn what I was missing when I was ignorant of the hype/backlash. Phil Fish and Fez, it already has the title of a Banjo and Kazooie like 3D platformer...

Amazon holding 'buy two, get one free' sale

I knew this was coming because the price of AC: Revelations, languishing in my shopping cart, jumped from 29.99 to 59.99 two days ago. A portent of the massive "savings" to come our way.

What can Japanese RPG developers learn from Rayman: Origins?

@kgrayman

I lived through the FFVII release. Just as I lived through opinions on FFXIII going from "good" to "the end of the JRPG" in the mass media. When something new comes out it's always going to be seen as an assault on the nostalgia we cling to. That's life.

"Twenty years later I would still think Final Fantasy XIII wasn't a great game" Not the point. The point is that when The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker released, fans jokingly called it the Legend of Celda, said it was for kids, etc. Now, there's a contingent of fans who consider it the best Zelda title. What changed? Time, and the people whose opinions are loudest. What these games, including Final Fantasy VII and XIII, have in common is that they tried something different. Those are the games people will remember and cherish most, no?

I wish them success. it's an intriguing concept. They probably need more nonsense words in that title to get sales though.

@threpac

I don't know what this nostalgia really means though. I remember when fans derided Final Fantasy VII because of its non-traditional industrialized take on Fantasy, its new character designer and the overlong summons spells. Now it's cherished. Just tell me where to look back, or which golden age to view through rose colored lenses and I'll tell you that in 2030 there will be an article titled, "Why Final Fantasy XIII was the best in the series" on whatever passes for joystiq then.

On the other hand I also feel like there are plenty of games that are staying the course with the classic JRPG look and feel, so is the author just saying, "I want this but better?" because I think we can all agree with that.

I dig the idea of "best in class" classic JRPGs but, like Rayman: Origins, you run the risk of just having a gussied up version of a classic. There's not a new idea in Rayman's pretty little head, and I don't think that's what JRPGs need right now. I think they need to grow organically from story ideas and not from character design and merchandising concerns. You only have to look at Final Fantasy XIII-2 and its blustery tale of time travel, to see that for all its epic scale and melodrama there's a lack of emotional resonance. Once JRPGs start to think smaller, more personal, and creator ordained then we'll see the genre grow stronger.
