Pachter: Online multiplayer games to blame for game sales decline

Jul 20th 2010 12:25AM (Joystiq)
Make great games and they will sell. Make shtty games and they won't.

Sales are down because folks have less money and are less amazed by the new round of games coming out. Plus music games have totally tanked. Folks got tired of those. DS software sales have dropped and so have Wii sales although both are still strong.

Ironically I believe the 360's software sales haven't decreased at all and have gone up a bit. And that's the biggest online platform amongst the 3 new consoles.

This is just a focus test group product. Have the masses make shtty programs and then Google can take those ideas/data and make better programs out of them and also targets ads to you based on your creation.

Great idea on paper. But did you see LittleBigPlanet videogame? How many actually want to create programs?

OnLive's MicroConsole coming by end of 2010

last E3 they said it would be out by 2009.

I'm getting the impression the tech isn't doable from a cost and logistics standpoint.

It would work great if we all lived within 100 miles of each other. But we don't. Multiplayer thusly will have to very segmented.

With SP it would work, but those games would play like mp games typically do - aka with a bit of lag.

ON top of it games on the system would be older and most gamers will have played them already or can buy them used or new for cheap.

@TareG

You should try one of those new-fangled VCRs. The locals around here call them DVRs.

Entelligence: Hello WebTV part II

I have to agree with the author.

I just don't see it.

No one wants that extra box. Or the big expensive remote control. AT least not the mass market.

You also don't need "Google" in order to search for mainstream TV and Video. cable, satellite, Tivo, etc all can do this now effectively enough.

And I already have a DVR that finds my shows and records them so I can watch them whenever. Why do I want to use GTV first?

All I do now is hit the DVR button, press ok to select My Recordings and then go down to the show I want to watch.

ON GTV I would take a few letters of the show I want to watch. Up would come 30 search results and I'd have to scroll down to figure what show is on my DVR. I just don't see the time saved here.

And again Tivo and Comcast etc already let you search for shows good enough.

So what would GTV be for? Searching for web video from the same interface. I'm not sure that's a big winner. Maybe in conjunction with a Tivo hooked to OTA in combination with Netflix and Amazon OD. Still one has to wonder how well integrated it would all be.
