Does the Wii escape the Uncanny Valley? [update 1]

Jun 19th 2006 1:13PM (Joystiq)
There's an apparent misconception here. The article, or rather the author, never stated Wii can't have games which fall prey to the Uncanny Valley. The argument is that because of the expectations which befall PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 developers to push the hardware as much as possible to create as realistic characters and environments as possible, those systems may be more prone to Mori's principle.

This issue is actually a very appropriate one. Considering the amount of time and money that will have to be poured into many next-generation titles, developement teams may not have the time or resources to animate their characters and respective movements appropriately to keep them out of the Uncanny Valley (read: awkward and unappealing).

With Wii, because the focus is on pleasant graphics and unique gameplay (the latter, because the Wii Remote relies on realistic gestures to create realistic in-game movements, keeps many titles away from one aspect of the Uncanny Valley), the machine is less prone to succumbing to the principle. Because so much time and energy does not need to be spent on Wii to create incredibly high-end, realistic visuals, more time can be spent on other aspects of the game which may pull greater emotional response in the player. That's the point.

And yes, I am the author of this article. I don't expect everyone to agree, and honestly would never desire such. As a writer, I see my purpose not as to nail the perfect argument, but to begin discussion, which I think I succeeded at. That noted, I'm rather disappointed by the lack of respect some of you exude. The Wiire team, including myself, puts forth an exhausting effort to provide the best resource for Wii on the Internet. If nothing else, respect that we care enough to invite these discussions and do it all as volunteers. Thank you and have a nice day.
