Gabe Newell on monetization before game design (spoiler: it stinks!)
Aug 30th 2011 10:13AM (Joystiq)I can get the concept of sustaining a living game (I've played enough CCGs, though I see the formula as unfulfilling now). I sure as hell can't understand approaches that end up fragmenting the game and playerbase AND PLAYERS SUPPORTING THOSE KINDS OF SHENANIGANS.
If someone is alone in a position that they're riding their next game release to the bank, they probably shouldn't be in game design. They are not trying to design a successful product; they are trying to design a highly grossing product, and I don't want to see that mindset in the next wave of developers, lest we forget the crash of '83, hmm?

Jul 20th 2011 5:31PM (Joystiq)I could care less how many progressive iterations Capcom releases in a short time span. I'm looking at the value of a game compared to other offerings, or methods of offerings. It's simply a fact of life that improvements to a game will come out and be monetized in the gaming industry. You're better off bitching at Wizards for releasing a new set of cards for Magic every three months.
Hell, let's extend this to any other development. You're the guy that bitches about buying a car off the line when the next year's model is, wait for it, next year or sooner. You get angry that your purchase of a car is now outmoded by the newest, greatest thing, but you have no qualms dumping near double that new car's cost in retrofits to your car just to match the performance increases. It's madness, irrational at its core, and you're just too mad to see it.
This happens all the time in just about every field, and Capcom has a history of it. I cannot see why you're getting angry at their status quo. Take it to Apple. Take it to television manufacturers. Take it anywhere else, because it's the same deal all the time.

Jul 20th 2011 2:01PM (Joystiq)By selling it as 40-50 bux in package, with more than just 12 new characters, it is way better to have them release a new SKU than put everything in digital form.
Basically, your whining amounts to you actually wanting to pay out the nose for new content.

Jul 13th 2011 10:13PM (Joystiq)And that's what I love about this game. I could care less that there's no deckbuilding, because there's rules to the randomization that allows you to figure out what your opponent has before he plays, and the game is so refined at this point that only truly skilled players can play any deal. Alexey and Richard have taken a very simple rules set and made an excellent game out of it, and Hothead has seen to it to keep that sense about it and present as a standalone product and not muddy it up with a lackluster distribution model.
The expansions come from the scenarios, which is how it should be if it were to continue following the board game sensibility, and there's no worry about a shortage there. Spectromancer has 12 classes at this point. They're fairly comfortable at this point with the game, and that's good. I don't want this game to become some brazen cash grab.
