GM-1 connects real drums to Guitar Hero, Rock Band

Jan 6th 2010 6:11PM (Joystiq)
"I'm stating a fact. If you wanted to play actual drums, you would not play plastic ones and would instead opt to learn how to play."

Is that a fact, or a sweeping generalization?

I have played bass guitar for about 10 years, and have enjoyed the Guitar Hero and Rock Band series since they came out (note that I was a musician first). I was looking forward to the drum portion because I had good rhythm, but no idea where to start when I sat behind a drum set and didn't want to make an investment for an instrument I might not like as much as the one I already played.

After a year of Rock Band and doing well on most songs on Expert (standard drum beats, if not odd time signatures and lightning-fast fills) I started playing in a band. They just assumed I was a bit rusty until I told them at the end of the summer that I had never played drums before that summer.

I continue to play, and my only 'formal' education came from Rock Band and little tips on technique from drummers. I never would have learned drums were it not for Rock Band. I'll say it again for you:

I NEVER WOULD HAVE LEARNED TO PLAY THE DRUMS IF IT WEREN'T FOR ROCK BAND

Rock Band is a step for people to gauge their interest and affinity for the drums before they make the leap to lessons and gigging, while at the same time teaching the fundamentals of limb separation and standard rock beats. Now, tell me again that it's a fact that people who want to play the drums don't play Rock Band.

Lemmy's facial hair trumps all the leather and coiffed hair in the world.

The Beatles: Rock Band visits Abbey Road

The ad blitz is mostly based around the Beatles re-releasing their entire catalog. Beatles: Rock Band is just a part of it.

Impressions: Rock Band Network (Creation)

Aug 27th 2009 7:15AM (Joystiq)
Actually, all the music on the network is copyrighted. You just have to own the copyright in order to post them.

So, me posting the song that I wrote a couple years ago (and therefor own a copyright on): allowed
Me posting Bohemian Rhapsody (I don't own a copyright to Queen songs): not allowed.

EEDAR: Guitar Hero 5 will outsell The Beatles: Rock Band by nearly 2-to-1

Aug 27th 2009 6:19AM (Joystiq)
Well, EA is just the distributor, so the only thing they add to Rock Band is trucks. Unless you really can't fucking stand their trucks, I don't think you're breaking any philosophical boycott by liking Rock Band.

Guitar Hero 5 DLC not compatible with World Tour

Aug 24th 2009 9:36PM (Joystiq)
"If Harmonix is telling me that I can't use my DLC in a future RB3, I'll stop buying DLC right now."

That's not even what's happening here. All the current GH:WT DLC can be played in GH5. It's just that DLC for GH5 will not work for the previous games.

In other words, songs maintain compatibility with your future versions of the game, but the DLC you buy for the new game doesn't work for the old.

The Beatles: Rock Band album DLC priced, dated, detailed

Absolutely not a fan. I'd rather not have to play Polythene Pam in order to play You Never Give Me Your Money and You're Gonna Carry That Weight. Or can we play them individually OR as a B-side medley?

Gran Turismo 5 will (finally) crush, flip those lovely cars

Aug 18th 2009 9:21PM (Joystiq)
I can. I'm glad The PS3 guys finally get a racer that lives up to its "the real driving simulator" tagline, and I will be perfectly happy customizing my cars in Forza 3. For the next generation, we'll continue to have good competition (and don't even pretend that Forza didn't push Polyphony to add damage modeling).

Guitar Hero: World Tour gets Vagrant Records track pack

Jul 25th 2009 3:26PM (Joystiq)
@False
Let's look at this plainly, then. A 3-pack for GH this week, three 3-packs and a single this week for RB. Last week was 3-pack for GH, three 3-packs for RB. Week before: 3-pack GH, 8-pack and a 3-pack RB. Before that: 3-pack GH, two 3-packs and a single RB. Bands seem reasonably the same caliber for both games, even a few overlaps, but Rock Band has about 3x the quantity.

There's no reason not to be excited about this if you like the bands, but that's just a matter of taste. For most players, it is 3x more likely they will enjoy the Rock Band DLC, just by the raw quantity.

Argue amongst yourselves over which is a better game overall, which is more fun to play, which has better peripherals, which has better creative tools. But I fail to see any logical argument that Guitar Hero has beaten Rock Band at DLC. Perhaps it is you who is the fanboy?

Why Blur can damage its cars

May 28th 2009 6:58AM (Joystiq)
I wouldn't call them 'realistic', but the crash and damage modeling is definitely a huge part of the game.
