The bottom line reality is that there are scores of women who will not play games because in their mind, games are for boys. In fact just this past weekend some friends and I were on a trip and we went into an arcade to play some videogames and many of the girls in the group refused to even enter the arcade because, in their own words, "um... because we're not boys?". And this goes to many activities outside of just gaming.
And yet many of these girls, when specifically approached with a product that is labeled as "for them", will buy one immediately.
There's nothing wrong with the "For Girlz!" moniker because these often self appointed "girly girls" respond well to the label. The girls who don't, again, WILL SIMPLY BUY THE REGULAR PSP.
It's no different than the shower poofs that have recently been redesigned with ridiculous grips and angles, labelled "Shower Tools for Men" by Axe and Old Spice and sold in the shampoo section. These men won't buy "poofs" but they will buy "shower tools for men". This isn't somehow insensitive or insulting by the company.
The real problem here is not the company, but the fact that many people who have posted here don't LIKE the type of girls who are attracted to this sort of imagery and so are making judgements based on THAT.
I'm annoyed by the backlash and judgement companies get when they take this route.
If you guys actually KNEW any women, you'd know that there REALLY ARE women who respond to this type of imagery, as the Barbie phenomenon has proved for decades. When Barbie first came out, it trounced it's competition because it's competition was piloted by morons like many gamers seem to be who didn't understand that some women really do like this crap.
The women who don't? WILL BUY THE REGULAR BLACK OR WHITE PSP!!!
It's not any any way offensive, obtuse, or insensitive for companies to make products to sell to the gazillions of women who buy pink powertools and laptops covered in fake crystals.
this is probably the most depressing and frustrating kind of comment on this situation. When people are eager to bat down any mention of racism and not be able to back it up with any facts on the matter.
Please listen to me when I say this, racism is a much bigger problem than most young white americans thing. Most young american period, really. And this is why black people talk about it so much that white people get tired of hearing about it.
American racism was very much an export to other countries in the 19th century. From Mamy in "Gone With The Wind" to Uncle Ben and Aunt Jemima, American racism penetrated the world. And where thing like afirmative action and civil rights faught hard to change that perspective in america, NO SUCH THING TOOK PLACE OVERSEAS. In Japan there was no need to redo racist artwork on a package of uncle bens rice featuring a racist black man. It would only cost more money, and there were no black people to complain. As a result racist visions of black people persist in Japan in a way they don't in America. If you don't believe me, look at dopey black faced red lipped Mr. Popo in Dragon Ball Z. Look at idiot rage-o-holic with the giant lips Balrog in SF2. Look at idiot rage-o-holic ebonics spitting violence loving Barrett in Final Fantasy VII.
Japan is MORE likely to have racist elements in it's games than the US is, and that's part of the reason they don't understand why RE5 is racist or how what they're doing is being taken as racist.
It's frustrating to see people arguing about how something is or is not racist when they don't even understand what racism is to begin with.
RE5 IS racist. The developres have even admitted it. They just don't understand what racism is and so don't understand that their being racist. This might be a newsflash to some people but MOST RACIST DON'T KNOW THEY'RE RACIST!
RE5s director is on record as saying that the whole design of the game is influenced by the concept of light vs. darkness and good vs. evil. He sited Black Hawk Down (Another racist film) as his inspiration.
Look, when you start trying to equte white people with purity and good, and black people with evil and darkness, you are being racist. How is that NOT racist? It was racist in the novel Heart of Darkness, it was racist in Frank Miller's 300, and it's racist in Resident Evil 5.
I guess that's my problem, Ludwig. I think Street fighter 2 and 3 are two of the few games available that stand the test of time. They don't need to be redone because they really can't be redone better. Or, at least, there's no reason for it to be redone.
There are songs out there that are the same way. Smells Like Teen Spirit IS what it was supposed to be. Nobody can do it better. And if you can't do it better, why redo it?
I own the street fighter aniversary collection and as a result I really feel no need to buy Street Fighter 4 if it's only going to be exactly what I already own but with polygons.
what upsets me about the way SF4 is going, is that it's shaking down to be the same game we've been playing for over a decade.
I don't understand a need to constanty rehash the same crap over and over again. On a bright new shiny console, old characters in old environments doing old things just feels... old. Why would I want to spend 60 dollars on an old game?
If there is not at LEAST 8 new unique characters in this game, I'm calling it crapware.
OMG Lilac PSP! Sony says 'Girlz Play Too'

Resident Evil 5 wasn't altered after racial kerfuffle

Prince of Persia's concept 'Elika' is unmistakably Natalie Portman
May 29th 2008 1:04AM (Joystiq)The chick from the cover of Tabula Rasa is CLEARLY Milla Jovavich. I would think enough to get sued for it unless some other provisions were made...
