5TH Cell: Scribblenauts' scandalous-looking 'sambo' item is a misunderstanding

Sep 17th 2009 12:02AM (Joystiq)
As a kid I had a record (you know, those big black round things) storybook of Little Black Sambo, and his adventures turning tigers to butter and eating pancakes and all that jazz.

There seemed to me, especially given my obliviousness to racial stereotypes at that age, nothing remotely derogatory about the story in regards to the main character, or black people in general. It was just a story about a kid and the stuff that happened to him. It certainly didn't turn me into a racist.

There's a hyper-sensitivity to racism in the world that causes people to completely drop rational thought and react to arbitrary linguistic connections rather than to the actual intent of the person speaking. You can't fight language. You can't stop the circulation of words in the world, and even if you managed to, the people who do have malicious intent towards you or a particular 'race' would use some other term for the same meaning.

Besides all that, the very idea of 'race' is a generalization, a simplified way to pidgeon-hole things. So is Hell, the same is true of 'species'. There are only individuals, every single one unique and deserving of approach without judgement. Sure, there are general trends and statistical probabilities, but none of us know enough people in our lives for those numbers to be relevant to how we perceive and treat individuals in our daily lives. You see 10, 20, maybe even 100 people of a certain race acting a certain way? Those numbers are fly shit when it comes to mapping your observations on a population of millions. Every single new person you meet, see or hear deserves the initial benefit of the doubt.

But you know all this already, no doubt. Just felt like mashing my keyboard.

Conn. State Sen. Slossberg wants confirmation of GTA IV rape scene

Regardless of there not actually being a rape scene, what continues to annoy me is the assumption by many that every time someone displays something in art, they are somehow automatically advocating it.

LucasArts' PC adventures possible on DS, stalled by size limitations

Jun 2nd 2008 12:23PM (Joystiq)
The talkies would work fine... in fact they already are (apart from Full Throttle I think). Do a search on youtube for ' scummvm ds '. You can witness the talkie DS action.

LucasArts' PC adventures possible on DS, stalled by size limitations

Jun 2nd 2008 11:54AM (Joystiq)
Size limitations is a bit of a feeble excuse when many people who use homebrew DS software are able to play most of those games using ScummVM right now.

I think the ones that work are:

Maniac Mansion
Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Loom
The Secret of Monkey Island
Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge
Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
Day of the Tentacle
and
Sam & Max Hit the Road

Games from Full Throttle and onwards are, I would assume, too big, but even so, that's a healthy collection of absolute classics right there.. Quite a few of the earlier games would fit onto one cart too.

'Break'-ing news: New Fracture trailer explores plot

Jun 2nd 2008 12:56AM (Joystiq)
So, on closer inspection, it turns out that despite this being 'original IP' for Lucasarts, it's not even developed by them. Is Lucasarts turning solely into a publisher? A samey one at that? There used to be something special about every LEC licence. Alas, there is now nothing special about any of them.

'Break'-ing news: New Fracture trailer explores plot

Jun 2nd 2008 12:47AM (Joystiq)
In direct response to the news post, it should surely be clear by now that the Lucasarts which "imbues their games with fantastic storytelling" well and truly died by the turn of the century. The few Lucasarts games since then to have great storytelling (such as Knights of the Old Republic) have been developed by other companies, and merely published by Lucasarts. Lucasarts haven't developed a unique or captivating game in around a decade.

My first impressions of fracture were the same as my impressions of this trailer: Generic. There is not a smidgen of unique character here, and it's unique character more than anything that once made Lucasarts great developers. Sure, people like blowing stuff up, and a terrain deformation gimmick is always going to be entertaining for a little while, but a bit of tech doesn't have the power to rescue a game from the bland vision of unoriginal writers and designers.

I'm really tired of generic future sci-fi universes and the action gameplay that takes place in them. I've been avoiding games like this for years, and there's little to no chance I'll end up playing this one.
