@achalddave It would be best for MSFT if they were solely interested in their own hardware, which they just might be. But, they have the opportunity to encroach on IOS and Android space with simple apps. In the end, its whether they think theyll get more money with the hardware only ecosystem or with a broader software ecosystem.
You're way wrong on point two and three. A prog to tie in my android phone to xbl would be incredible. Even if it's just a way to see which friends are online and send messages, queue up d/ls, etc. They could make money hand over fist if people could spend microsoft points from their mobile. Zune is the premier subscription music service, many, many people would likely drop itunes in a heartbeat if they could, i know i would. They stand to make tons of money off of zune for other os's, because then people would be using zune to buy their music, not itunes or amazon.
