For a moment.

The number of Americans dieting is at a 16 year low

Jan 16th 2007 1:11PM (Slashfood)
I don't need any kind of statistics to tell me that a great majority of Americans is overweight - just a trip to mall. You might not be aware of this because you are seeing these people every day, but when I go home I start wondering "Why is everybody so small... or WAIT!!...".

Funny, when I go to the mall in Florida, I see the exact opposite trend. I don't see a majority of people overweight. Most are in good shape. I have noticed that Europeans tend to be smaller than many Americans, but only in height and musculature. When it comes to being overweight, I don't notice any particular difference.

"So, unless you are a bodybuilder type (and you know if you are), and CDC BMI tells you are overweight, you probably are(or you are a mutant... ninja turtle). If you continue to be overweight you will (simply) not only look and feel bad but also get sick and if you are lucky die quickly."

I eat well and exercise five days a week. I look and feel fine, and rarely get sick. The CDC BMI could not be more wrong.

Failing to take into account one's proportion of lean tissue to fat is what makes the CDC's numbers fail. Anybody with a decently developed musculature is going to qualify as overweight for their height on their chart. Muscle is heavier than fat.

The CDC must love scrawny, poorly-muscled individuals, since that's what their BMI is biased towards. Paying attention to their numbers will result in a trend towards anorexia and other eating disorders, and not a healthy lifestyle.

Donuts lead way in trans fat elimination

This trend is precisely why local governments don't need to intrude and begin banning trans-fats. Once enough consumers are educated, which is happening at quite a rapid pace these days, the market will demand these changes on its own.

Top Chef 2, episode 10 recap

Jan 15th 2007 8:32PM (Slashfood)
Serving food with too much salt gets you sent home.
Serving a soggy funnel cake nearly gets you sent home.

But serving RAW CHICKEN gets you a pass?

Marcel should have been sent home. Period. Do not pass go, do not collect $200. The judges embarassed themselves in this episode by being inconsistent and playing favorites.

Elia got a pass this episode for the same reasons they nearly sent Sam home.

Ilan got a pass for this episode for the same reasons they nearly sent Cliff home.

And Michael got sent home even though he was pretty much the only person who didn't do anything wrong this week. It was clear that a producer phoned in and told them to dump him, no matter what flimsy excuses they had to use to do so.

The "diner" clearly failed: Nobody wanted to go into their restaurant until Sam's was full, they made no attempt to follow their own concept, aside from the poorly cooked burger they made, and they served raw chicken and a recombined oreo cookie. And that was on top of all the other problems.

But, they needed to get rid of Michael, so they had to call both teams failures this time, no matter the ridiculous excuses they had to use to do so (They wanted the Italian team to provide white and red wine selections in addition to the food? On a $20 per customer budget?)

And Tom exposed himself as a liar by trying to claim that Michael was only being carried by his teammates the week after he won both the Quickfire and Elimination challenge, with no help from anyone, making him the first person in the series to do that within the same episode.

The judges should be ashamed of themselves.

Marcel was clearly only saved because they liked the conflict he brought to this show. There is no excuse for serving raw chicken to 24 customers. Michael took the axe because the producers didn't like him, and he was the only guy who was consistently laid back and didn't provide idiotic drama for TV.

After months of enjoying this series, I lost a great deal of respect for the show and the judges on it after this one episode.

The number of Americans dieting is at a 16 year low

Being 100% muscle isn't exactly healthy, but that's besides the point. The point, rather, is that the CDC just measures height and weight, and doesn't bother determining whether you're 10% bodyfat or 40% bodyfat before they declare you overweight or obese. Any professional bodybuilder would qualify as obese by their standards.
