Sad. Truly sad how many people assume that a large portion of the world using Windows XP makes learning ON Windows XP a good idea. I could get into the nits of why this is untrue, but I think I'll just make a simple assertion that I expect to evaluate true (much like the others who I can't be arsed to name one-by-one): A child that learns to use a computer on a modern Linux system will be more productive, more knowledgeable, more versatile, and more able to accomplish what is demanded of him or her than any other platform's user, all other things being held equal.
People still use WASD? Really? Why do you even use the keyboard if you're going to limit yourself like that. Why not use it? Simple, really: it's not a natural position for your fingers. Even ASDF is a much better option (AERG, myself). Left mouse is forward, right mouse is primary fire. Also, mice have the advantage of often having extra buttons (mouse 5 is jump). Add hotkeys and piped keybinds to the equation and, even in the Physics-Dimension-of-Weightless-String-and-Frictionless-Ice, there's no way that this can even be a fair argument.
"it was using an aftermarket battery which exceeded the cell rating and overheated, plus the fan was broken so the computer was one big hot plate"
@Paul: Dammmit! Post right before yours! "...Dells use proprietary parts and low wattage power supplies...." And unless their acquisition of Alienware suddenly enabled their grunt workers able to put a computer together better under the same conditions and in the same facilities as before with the same parts as before...forget that train of thought: they're still shoddy pieces of workmanship, just like last week.
