The Batarang controllers you deserve, but not the ones you need

Jun 4th 2011 11:23AM (Joystiq)
@goat biscuit

At $50, it's far from cheap. If it's cheaply made, it's a ripoff at that price.

But I'm so happy that Microsoft won't allow wireless controllers from 3rd parties. I hate batteries when not absolutely necessary. I have my eye on a Razer Onza.

Xbox 360 seeing stronger sales with age, 55 million consoles sold globally

Jun 4th 2011 9:54AM (Joystiq)
If accurate, what this graph tells me is that anyone who says that X360 sales have peaked is full of it. Higher sales, longer life in the market.

Chair: More Shadow Complex is 'a question of when'

May 22nd 2011 7:51PM (Joystiq)
"I'm not a fan of trying to shoehorn console controls onto touch screens. They don't feel right. You just lose so much precision." -- Chair

Now there's a quote for a signature if I ever saw one.

Xbox 360 PayPal update arrives right on schedule ... in some territories

May 19th 2011 12:21PM (Joystiq)
"This particular update will also bring an auto-standby feature that places your console on standby if it’s idle for more than one hour, helping to reduce power consumption." -- Major Nelson

So, does this work like Windows, where the state of the machine is saved, then later you can "Resume" it? Or does it just kill whatever game session you paused, then took a bit too long to get back to?

New Xbox 360 update incompatible with some models, MS offering replacements [update]

May 18th 2011 6:30PM (Joystiq)
Can you try to be a little less confusing, please? Are you saying that the system update which causes this issue for some users is *already* on our systems, and has been for some time? I remember getting a small mandatory update not too long ago. Maybe it's been a month or so.

Source: Xbox 360 Spring 2011 update launches May 19, adds PayPal

@FriedConsole

In the USA, credit card companies have *no choice* but to eat the losses from fraud, except for the first $50 per card. Add to that the shady nature of Paypal. (Just look up the troubling stories of Paypal taking money out of people's accounts, and not giving it back for a long time, if ever.) The end result is no Paypal for me as far as I can avoid it.

PSN reactivation delayed for 'further testing,' likely not coming back this week

May 8th 2011 1:18PM (Joystiq)
"You CANNOT swap one hard drive from one PS3 and put it in another! It's encrypted and locked to the one machine it was formatted in. Put it in any other PS3 and it will reformat it and you will lose everything."

@(Unverified)

Really? Thanks for the heads up. I know I'll end up buying a PS3 someday, and I'm used to being able to transport an X360 HDD across multiple consoles. This limitation will take some getting used to.

Game designer writes academic report on effective Achievements

Apr 28th 2011 12:17PM (Joystiq)
Yeah, they should fix that link to point to Page 1 of the article.

When an Xbox game gets DLC, you are required to download an update to the game, whether or not you intend to buy the DLC. After the update, the completion gamerscore for the game goes up to a point you can't reach unless you buy all the DLC. Nothing has done more to make me reject the [my gamerscore / completion gamerscore'] stat than this. (For example, 200/250, or 1000/1250.) Achievements and gamerscore are good concepts when done right. But this is just a shameless cash grab that I'm sure nabs a lot of score-obsessed people. The target score should not go up *until* you buy the DLC.

XBLA in Brief: Nin2-Jump, Trouble Witches Neo

Apr 28th 2011 11:45AM (Joystiq)
Outland is the standout this week, and I know there's a joystiq review up already. But I was surprised it got no love in this video.

I tried Nin2-Jump, and my experience was in line with the norm here, namely that it comes across as overly crude, even considering the style it's going for. I'm downloading the trial for Trouble Witches now. My only experience with this particular brand of shooter genre was a Cotton game in an emulator a few years back. I loved it! So I gotta try this.

Sony: response to PSN outage was dependent on 'forensic analysis'

Apr 27th 2011 11:36AM (Joystiq)
I love all the Sony apologists here. They're getting so thick that soon Sony won't have to hire PR guys anymore. Maybe Sony can invest those savings in a truly secure network.

Yes, the hackers are the bad guys, like all thieves are. But if you leave your door wide open and the lights on inside, shining on all your fancy toys, then you call all burglars pussies on national TV, don't tell me you're blameless when everything is gone.
