Plex 1.1 for iOS adds functionality, interface changes

Apr 11th 2011 3:53AM (TUAW.com)
Unfortunately, I have to chime in with the negative experiences: just like Michael K. already mentioned above, the Plex Server stole significant performance on my (early 2009) Mac mini by constantly re-indexing its database. Furthermore, the app had awful problems recognising some of the TV shows and movies on my disc, since I didn't adhere to the desired naming conventions. And – oddly – quite a few videos only played badly, constantly stuttering or stopping with Plex, while in FrontRow or even simply the Quicktime Player they ran smoothly.

Plex quickly was deleted again...

Apple to drop Samba networking tools from Lion

Mar 24th 2011 9:30AM (TUAW.com)
Oh great – I see scores of problems with Windows networks coming up.

You can say about Samba what you want, but it has become pretty reliable. A completely new solution will inevitably have birth pangs at least until OS X 10.8 comes out... >_

Use TextExpander and Twitterrific to avoid Twitter spam

My tip to avoid Twitter spam: don't use Twitter. ;)

Honestly, after five years I still don't see the point.

Zaprudering the Invite: Anything to see?

I seriously hope 2011 is not yet another year of the iPad. I want it to be the year of the Mac.

Dammit, Apple, give the Mac a bit more love than you do at the moment! Blow us away with astonishing new technologies and re-designs that make the Mac once more trend-setting and attractive. At the moment, its development is just stagnant and behind.

Intel announces Core 2011 processor details; hackintosh fans post benchmarks

Jan 4th 2011 12:22PM (TUAW.com)
"... providing speculation that most future MacBooks may do away with a separate GPU."

I certainly hope not. Everything I have read so far (including benchmarks of pre-series Sandy Bridge CPUs) leads me to the conclusion that the graphics performance of the new Intel chips – while better than any Intel IGP before – is still far worse than any other GPU. So "doing away" with the separate GPU – even if it's "just" the 320M with shared graphics memory – would be a massive step backwards.

Word Lens: an augmented reality language translator for iPhone

o_O Unbelievable. That's plain awesome. They really put it right in the ad: Welcome to the Future! I wonder what other languages they will offer.

Epic Games to release updated Unreal Dev Kit for iOS on Thursday

Okay, nice. And where's the UDK for Mac? Where's Epic's Mac version of the UE3 for that matter? Gathering dust on some shelf?

Rest in peace, Adobe Media Player... you will not be missed

Dec 15th 2010 2:55AM (TUAW.com)
Hm, I think this is the very first time that I ever heard of this thing - which can be taken as a sign of how unnecessary the AMP was. RIP, Adobe Media Player, no one knew you, no one will miss you.

ForkLift 2, slick file management, fast file transfers

Nov 25th 2010 11:03AM (TUAW.com)
I would still be interested in a capable file manager as an alternative to Path Finder. PF is nice, but horribly bloated with unnecessary additions and surprisingly lacks on the other hand important features like batch renaming.

ForkLift on the other hand, while usable as a local file manager is too obviously centred on being an FTP client. And – as SwissMac mentioned – it had some ugly problems in the past.

Dang! That was supposed to be a reply to Kirbytime.
