How much would you spend on a PS3 game?

Jun 28th 2006 1:08PM (Joystiq)
I don't understand why gamers and videogame bloggers think the videogame industry is immune to inflation. The fact is, depreciates over time. Look how much things cost when your parents were growing up. SNES games debuted at $50 (some say more, but let's be realistic) 1990. At a 4% inflation rate, games today should cost ~$93. Honestly, you wonder why so many game companies are going out of business? It's because they are locked into a pricing model that doesn't allow them to benefit from making original games. Not to mention, people would buy less games at a higher price... so games would be significantly better to compete for your money. Price controls hurt.

The jacket that says "I can afford a PS3"

There is no way there will be a BluRay-less PS3. That is simply an ignorant comment as the games will all be on BluRay discs. Not only that, but the Sony is going to make significantly more money on BluRay disc sales than it will on any hardware. Hardcore (and fashion) gamers are the ones that will pay $600 for a system. Also, anyone that wants a BluRay player for $400 less than the others will pick it up as well. As such, the system will still sell out. As the price drops in the coming year, more and more casual gamers will pick it up. The price will drop to keep sales up with production, and not before.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl, see it for yourself

This looks good compared to current Gamecube games... but it pales in comparison to PS3 or even 360 games. For Nintendo's sake, I sure hope the gameplay is amazing.

Wrong. Nintendo showed the Sony and Microsoft don't know how to get in touch with NON-gamers. Good job failing your target market.

Okay, I am back. Yes, the PSP did not sell out. This is not because it wasn't a great product Nor was it because it didn't have two screen. Nor was it because of the higher price point.

The reason it didn't sell out is because of the poor quality and number of games available at launch. It still suffers from this. Still, the system is considered a success.

To #41:

I get it. I have two business degrees. This thing is, most launch systems are completely sold out in the first day of sales. Then, people sell them on eBay for over a grand and most people get them in this way. No doubt, PS3 will sell out as soon as they can stock the shelves for many reasons (especially that Blu-Ray players will be about $400 more at the time it is released). Then, the price will drop when sales are not keeping up with output. It is a simple business policy.

Well, I am done commenting for now. I must work and all.
