Where is the hands on? Sony practically was begging reporters to try Move.... Is it coming later?

I don't know if any of these wii like devices from other makers will stick, but its fun to watch them try.

Apple aware of Snow Leopard accounts bug that kills data, is working on a fix

Oct 12th 2009 11:55PM (Engadget)

Acording to some slashdotters

Causes:
-It happens on snowleopard upgrades (Not fresh installs)
- Guest account must be enabled on the Leopard machine prior to upgrade
-From guest account a hard crash or reboot without shutting down.

It is mentioned that even with those facts, people are having trouble reproducing it.

As someone writes mission critical software I can see how this could happen. Writing reliable software is very difficult. This really should have been caught but it does seem rare.

Here the thing though. People are going to get attached whatever applications they have on their phone, so likely they want the next phone to run the apps they have now. Maybe I'm wrong, but when you've paid for the geocaching app and the knitting app and the iridium flare app, you have some incentive to return to the same platform.

I think over time more and more apps will be cross platfrom but I think this is why it all these makers are trying to grab as much market share as possible now.

Me? My phone isn't smart yet....

Microsoft unveils Barrelfish multi-core optimized OS

Sep 29th 2009 11:56PM (Engadget)
As someone who works on machines with lots of cores. ... You get great improvement in speed (almost double) if you can run seperate processes on each core that deal with completely different memory. The main problem is most normal desktop use don't do that, plus if you have to make a system call, you often wait on the OS which runs on one cpu. (Semeaphores/ locks and memory management by definition need to remain coherent. across all cores)

Now a lot of applications are Threaded processes running on seperate cores accessing the same memory, but again you have an extra layer to make sure that the memory is in a proper state when each thread is working on it (thread a isn't working on data while thread b is waiting for the result, or worse using out of date data), and that is not a completely insignificant overhead.

The article is short on details on what this new approach gets you. Besides now having to work in the small memory space in cache. I can't believe they think message passing will be faster than shared memory. Where you going to store the message? This sounds like it will require new thinking in application development, at a time when programs are just starting to get more threaded.

Thats Pablo Picasso who said that, who ironically kinda stole the quote from someone else.

@WixosTrix

Point taken.

Apple can be a little slow on the uptake sometimes (the nano includes a radio now?!?)

There is the 99% apple rule which is a little out of date but kinda funny.

I think what people get aggrivated about it that this is another case where content is sold to customers has less functionality than pirated versions.

If you pirate it, you can back it up, change the format to play on portable devices etc. if you buy it legit, you can't do those things. Its the curse of DRM. I actually don't by Blu Ray for this reasons (I like to watch movies on my laptop when I travel).

This is better than nothing though...

That or we're just all old and cranky... Get of my Lawn!, if you want good comments free from fan boys go to Ars or Slashdot! ARrrg!
