Validas study finds Verizon smartphones consuming more data than iPhones

Jul 30th 2010 12:52PM (Engadget)
@irocha It is $15 per month for 200 MB and another $15 for an additional 200 MB if you go over. SO my post should have read $30 for 400 Mb. From AT&T's website

"
What if I go over 200 MB? DataPlus 200MB for iPhone includes 200MB of data for use in the U.S. If 200MB is exceeded, an additional 200MB is automatically provided at a rate of $15 for each additional 200MB. All data allowances, including overages, must be used in the billing period in which the allowance is provided. For more details on Data Plans, go to www.att.com/dataplans.

Validas study finds Verizon smartphones consuming more data than iPhones

Jul 30th 2010 10:58AM (Engadget)
The takeaway should not be that VZW smartphone users use more data on average) than AT&T but that the average AT&T smartphone user uses about 338 Mb per month. This is a far cry from the less than 200 Mb for more than 95% that At&T was saying a couple of months ago when they changed their tariffs.

So now you will end up paying $30 per month for only 500 Mb instead of 5 GB. Can they be sued?

Family Feud finds a home on PSN today, for $10

@McDuckScrooged The game show is NOT about getting the right answer but what the common answer is among the participants (hopefully a representative of common man) ?

I believe they have surveyed ~2000 people to com up with the answers. The show used to irk me as well so I am not planning on buying it.

Pre Plus and Pixi Plus free on contract, with free accessories, too

Pre Plus for free is a great deal. I have an original PRE and it is no slouch, however more memory definitely makes it more responsive.

Palm retroactively refunding $50 webOS app submission fee -- each and every one

Jun 29th 2010 9:40PM (Engadget)
@mflynn I have bought about 300 of them. I also have about the same number on my ipad. However, none of my friends have bought that many apps. Looking at the polls on various websites a typical iphone user only has 4 pages of apps i.e. ~64 apps total including builtin ones.

WebOS has ~2800 apps in the app catalog and I have found at least one good app for everything I needed to do. The only thing missing is voice recognition and that is so because the API is not there yet.

While I understand the long tail issue, Appstore has more than 190,000 apps and when it had 134000 apps 1000 of them were Bible apps. 45-55% of the apps were games last I checked. Most productivity type apps have counterparts on webOS and some are even better than there iphone counterparts (not by the same maker).

For those that like games a lot of the games from big companies like EA, Glu mobile and gameloft are also available on webOS.

Samsung Epic 4G preview

Jun 29th 2010 7:08PM (Engadget)
@babyJesus Hummingbird is a Cortex A8 based design with SGX 540 (rumored to be 2-4 times more powerful than SGX 530 which was found in OMAP 3430 think Droid, Palm PRE) SGX 530 was still more powerful than snapdragon ( AFAIR in terms of triangles per second SGX530 is 28 Million Vs 22 Million for snapdragon and 90 million for SGX540)

Snapdragon's porcessor core is a deeper pipelined architecture of Cortex A8 and is thus capable of running at a higher speed with lower IPC (instructions per clockcycle). Clock per clock however hummingbird is faster than snapdragon processor. Combined performance of both more powerful processor and more powerful GPU means hummingbird based devices are currently the most power on the market (Samsung wave and every galaxy S based device).

Droid X is based on OMAP 3630 which has similar processor core but graphics core is still SGX530.

Iphone 4 uses hummingbird as well (a custom SOC with the same processor) but it is running it at ~800 MHz based on performance numbers (Apple doesn't release speed data) and on the fact that it is running slower than ipad processor which is the same A4 processor running at 1 GHz).

Cisco unveils Cius Android tablet with HD video capabilities (update: video!)

Jun 29th 2010 3:54PM (Engadget)
Cisco Cius has both wifi and 3G/4G so it is a phone and hence should have no problem accessing Android Marketplace.

I am wondering what 4G technology is it supporting? WiMax or LTE?
