You nailed it, though, with "the difference between a space and no space spurs no miscommunication or misunderstanding."
This article is pedantic in the worst way: the "confusion" it creates is imaginary, as it literally confuses NO ONE, so the article isn't really striving to help with clarity, and worse, IT'S NOT EVEN TRUE. GB is not a metric measurement, so the rule quoted does not apply.
